After the Umbro Cup that England played Brazil Spurs were offered Roberto Carlos and Juninhio for a combined fee of 5m but it was deemed a risk and Ruel Fox was brought in for 4.5!!!

I remember Sugar refused to pay £4.5m for Zola saying he was over priced, Carlos Kickaball and that

Gianfranco Zola before he went to Chelsea was offered to us for £4.5 million. Sugar said no as he was "too old". Didn't do too badly for Chelsea did he??

King and Campbell would have been amazing, I know they played together but like you say would've redefined the whole decade

As far as I can remeber Levy actually agreed to the price, and then Zenit raised it. He then agree to it again and Zenit raised it. He then agreed to it again and Zenit said, basically (I paraphrase): "well, you can't have him anyway".

And I am not known for being one of Dan Levy's more sycophantic supporters:-|

Still makes me laugh when we announced that we "nearly signed Rivaldo"!

How bad was that going to work on the monday?

Although it was nice of him to say "I was so excited to play in England and to play for a big club like Tottenham...".......During his unveiling at AC Milan.:bang:

Rivaldo actually wrote a public letter thanking spurs and only went for the CL football. That courtesy spared some blushes.

Arshavin was the worst decision in recent years. Resigned Keane and bought Pavleyuchenko instead.

We could have had an option of a lovely three pronged attack.

We deffo wanted Diego and he went to Germany instead. Why go to the Bundesliga over the Prem?

Souness was meant to be mustard for Spurs youth, but was homesick.

Crouch, sold him for 1 million, he was awful, paid 12 million to get him back.

On the upside to these, we nearly signed Dean Ashton for 18 million!!!

Arshavin has hardly set the league on fire, has he? I'm actually glad we missed out on him, he's been average at best and would be the source of many Keane like threads on here based on recent performances.

That's coming from someone who was seriously pissed when we missed out on him.

Venables prefering to look for a packet of walkers crisps to signing Beckham.

Petit using sugar's cab money to go round the corner and sign for arsenal.

Roy Keane was a spurs fan as a youngster but the spurs scout failed to turn up to see him play in ireland and forest nipped in and got him, the spurs scout had first dibs on keane but couldn't be bothered!

trouble is, recently we have signed all the so called future superstars and been left with Iversen,Acimovic, blondel, Bunjecevic, terry dixon, pekhart, taarabt, dos santos to name a few!!

Wasn't our choice. As has already been pointed out, Levy swallowed his pride a few times to make that deal happen, and the Russian's just kept taking the piss. We were right to walk when we did.

We'd also long brought Pav' in - it wasn't a case of either or.

We deffo wanted Diego and he went to Germany instead. Why go to the Bundesliga over the Prem?

He didn't choose to go to Germany over Spurs. His work permit was rejected... so he went to Portugal, where he failed to deliver on his promise. Werder Bremen then signed him on the cheap a few years later, and he was a massive success.

Souness was meant to be mustard for Spurs youth, but was homesick.

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I read that he was actually pissed off at not starting for Spurs. Rumour has it he thought he was the best player at the club before he'd even made his debut.

Crouch, sold him for 1 million, he was awful, paid 12 million to get him back.

Sold for £60,000 - even worse. Though, how can you say he was awful? He didn't play a single minute for the first team, although he was top scorer for the reserves. Harsh either way.

I think we paid £9m-£10m back for a now proven, very experienced International striker with Champions League experience. Seems fair, no?

On the upside to these, we nearly signed Dean Ashton for 18 million!!!

When and where did you hear that?

Didn't we take Rebrov instead of a certain Andrei Schevchenko too?

I've also heard of a certain day that goes by the name of Torres day. I'm not sure exactly what happened, all I know is there was ITK, apparently, that said we were getting him. What a signing that would have been.

Nah, Shev' had been at Milan a year before we signed Rebrov. There was however some talk that we tried to take Shevchenko to WHL a little while later, but he claimed he was having none of it based on the treatment of his mate.

Regarding Torres, Jol later confirmed that it was a case of Berbatov for around £10m or Torres for double that. We decided on Berbatov, and I still maintain it the correct decision.

You are a fountain of knowledge Christophe. Duly repped.

Ah, I always thought we took Rebrov instead. Had been told we wouldn't pay the extra £1 million or something. That makes thing better. :)
