Its not a function of the same quality, obviously impossible to match Rose's quality, but we need to match function. Davies is an entirely different style of LB to Rose and that is what causes the problem. We need a LB with pace who is comfortable attacking. They won't be as good as Rose at either attacking or defending but they will allow us to play the same way. I think this is the art of squad building, to on the one hand have back ups who can replace the starter like for like and simultaneously have some variety in the squad that allows you to change the pattern of play when needed. Sadly in most respects we lack both. We don't have players to come in and replace like for like (Davies, Janssen) and the players who are supposed to offer us something different (Sissoko, GKN) just aren't fulfilling that function.
Up until a couple of weeks ago, i dont think anyone was giving Ben Davies the shit thats been posted here, he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory recently, but lets face it the whole team has looked shit for the last few matches...now all of a sudden Davies is shit and needs replacing.

Stinks of scapegoating to me.

That's fair. It's a question I think one could ask about every sports team that has ever existed.

Ultimately there are so many factors when you're talking about 11 individuals following another individuals plan to beat 11 individuals who are following an individuals plan to beat you.

If the people in charge can't work out how to win every game then I'm not going to be able to either. I just try to look at the overall picture and think about it pragmatically.
Certainly there's no point in having a meltdown after an individual result, I do agree there. I would say that we SHOULD be in a better position to get at them on the Wembley pitch. It would be embarrassing to think that it's all over after a 1-0 defeat to a side that we really should be easing past.

We've been superb this season, I refuse to lose my shit over 2 losses. Every team will lose games now and then. Liverpool were better than us on the day and away games in Europe always have the potential to be difficult.

The manner of our performances has been disappointing of late but we're hardly in crisis mode ffs.

Bring on Fulham!

Its a valid point but where are we going to find a left back who comes close to Rose in terms of quality, who'll be happy to sit on the bench for 90% of matches?
I doubt there are any.

Clearly there are not.
There very few around and if we find one
we couldn't afford the fee or the wages.

So we appraise Davies for the role
and if he's not able enough for the way we want to play
we go to what I thought was Plan A.
Youth and/ or the Academy.
Rose will have been an inspiration to some of our own
for a number of reasons.
They won't be anywhere near the finished article
and neither are we
but Pochettino needs to live up to his various reputations
and get someone trained up and`ready, pronto.

We seem t be stuck between stations at the moment.
We want to play a certain way but are thrown when injuries occur.
Great team,moderate squad.
But who's fault is that?.
Don't look at me.

Not scapegoating him, he is a good player but it is also fairly obvious that he isn't an attacking LB and that is now what our system requires.

We're u saying this 2 weeks ago?
Or u just decided that it's obvious after the last few games?

Not that I see the relevance but I've felt Davies is a different LB to Rose for a while. It has become more relevant after the recent move to 3-4-3 which only happened recently.

We've been superb this season,

No we haven't. We have been solid for a couple of months. For the most part we have struggled to score, were terrible in the CL, terrible in the league cup and almost lost to Wycombe in the FA Cup. Now a 2nd string, 8th placed side in the Belgian league beat us.

Fulham away will be a hard cup tie and then we have the decision whether to put out a strong side against Gent with the Prem fixture shortly after.

There was a telling quote from Dembele: "Generally I think they wanted it more than us, they were sharper, more motivated than us.”

We had a team packed full of internationals last night, terrible performance!

Why are people banding about names like Walker-Peters and Edwards like they're going to saunter in to our team and turn our season around?

It's doing my nut in.
both would do better than sissoko

Regardless of who is willing to sit on a bench etc any team with aspirations of being successful has to have quality cover within the squad.
I think what levy and Poch have tried to do is concern themselves with not upsetting the harmony of the squad maybe a bit too much rather then identify and recruit a better standard of player.
Despite those reservations overall the team club has more than punched above its weight considering the restraints that the club works with.

So....the thread is a bit kneejerk, we were always going to have a downturn in form, it happens to every team at some point.

The frustrations are that it seems to link into injuries to key players - Kane and Alderweireld earlier this season and now Rose and Vertonghen, this is worrisome as you would hope the players would rally round when injuries occur.

My own personal frustrations are that when we do get injuries we seem to try and accommodate our strongest 11 players rather than keeping the same shape. Dier and Alderweireld both prefer RCB, whereas Wimmer is a LCB, so when Vertonghen goes down, it should be a simple swap out for Wimmer. Similar for Davies, we've seen him as LB, and LCB (for Wales) so asking him to play as our attacking LWB isn't going to suit him.

If we had decided to stick with the 3 at the back, we could have brought in Wimmer/Davies for Vertonghen and utilised someone like N'Koudou as LWB (granted he doesn't play the position naturally but is closer to Rose's attacking skill-set than Davies).

I think keeping that system would have yielded different results. Furthermore if Poch wanted to revert to 4-2-3-1 to try and get results or because he felt it was our best chance at winning, I fully get it, but when it wasn't working against Liverpool or Gent why not try the 3-4-3 again?
