I've never known the "Bootcamp" philosophy to work?
I doubt any of the top teams have this ethic. Work hard, yes for sure - but double training sessions every day always end up injuring players or wearing them out at key times in the season.
More work with the ball and the system please gaffer.

Teams like Barca, Dortmund, Atletico, Liverpool and all Mourinho teams have all employed double sessions at various times throughout recent seasons while AVB also employed them in his first season. It is more about high intensity football than high intensity running. Klopp's and Mourinho's sessions make players work on and off the ball.

Cumulative fatigue throughout the season can be an issue so players have to be monitored. It is one of the reasons that teams with small squads which suffer injuries can struggle down the stretch - think Southampton at times last season, Atletico in extra time of the CL Final, Barca in the last month of this season, Dortmund two years ago.

The most interesting nugget in that article is this aside:

That's the first time I've ever read that, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were true. Does anyone else have any supporting info on that?

There may be some truth about the low upfront figure (13m?) but I'd be surprised if Valencia did not take other measures to cover themselves.
They probably had a clause like, maybe, receiving a percentage of the
selling price if we decided to off-load him within the first two years of his
contract with us.

It could be a morning session for fitness and afternoon session for ballwork and tactics.

Because Lennon has been at this club a long time now and has gotten comfortable. Last season he was starting games without justifying it. As much as I've rated him down the years, I'm doubtful of his having a positive reaction to double, boot camp like training sessions.

How long a list do you want?

Gruelling fitness is fine ... as long as the footballing aspect is still the main emphasize...

.. and Ade did a self imposed suicide fitness training regime last year, when AVB was about.. yuou could see it in the first few games back..

I do worry about trying to impose boot camps when the players have just returned form a gruelling world cup
I think the term "boot camp" (probably coined by the media in this case) is causing some of us to imagine an Army-type regimented set-up, when in fact it could be no more than two sessions a day; the first being running/fitness and the second being ball-work....nothing that a top athlete can't handle.
And yes, at first the Southhampton players probably did a lot of sleeping between the two sessions, but a sleep/nap rest helps recovery.

Too fucking right. These players have had it far to easy. No more leaning on a wall looking like you don't give a fuck before a game or you ain't playing

Tottenham Injury Tables:
13-14 1441 days missed (2nd)
12-13 925 days (9th)
11-12 1450 days (2nd)
10-11 1486 days (1st)

1st and 2nd in this table is not good.

For comparison Chelsea were 19th, 19th, 19th and 18th. What it means is that they keep their players fit and on the pitch which provides a deeper squad and better options at the business end of the season.

I think we will benefit here from the fact MP is implementing his ways in pre-season. It was probably a case of getting players up-to speed on his style, pressing and therefore fitness necessity which created the need for double sessions at the beginning of his rein at Southampton.

There is so much technology (recovery, nutrition etc) out there that the players won't be 'overworked' as such. Training changes hugely in and out of season and Is unlikely to be a cause for concern. Roll on kicking our egos into shape i say!
