...he is not exactly fluent, to put it kindly. How do you think communication is in the squad ? Does it affect the process of getting ideas by ? Did he speak english at all when he was at soton ?

1: Fine, in fact i'd suggest his English is better than people think when not under the pressure of being interviewed and having to worry about exactly how he phrases things
2: No, not at all
3: Yes, to the squad and behind the scenes but (obviously) not in interviews

All in me 'umble onion guvnor :D

it's far harder to speak another language in a free flowing conversation than it is in a structured environment (interview/ business meeting etc)

I think football is a pretty universal language to be honest.

Sure, and i agree, but still feel a little bit uncomfortable listening to him in interviews (he probably feels uncomfortable in those situations too though). Hopefully the players don't feel the same

OP living up to his screen name...

English is fine. I'd suggest it's far superior to our last two english managers grasp of our language.

honest question, not intended as a dig or looking for conflicts with Poch, who i like very much

Harder maybe, but there is also a lot less pressure. Pochettino used his translator for so long because he's media savvy enough to know how some media folk will jump on any slip ups and twist words to suit agendas. When he is interviewed you can see that he takes a few seconds at the start of each answer to think how best to answer it. Then he speaks reasonably well, but still takes his time. His answers may not be fluent but they are carefully considered. Pellegrini actually does something similar but with Pellegrini, once he gets going his English is superb and so once he knows what he wants to say he gets his words out very quickly.

When he is addressing the players behind closed doors there is no need for his terminology and phrasing to be so considered and so I'd imagine he speaks much more fluently in those situations.

Apparently wasn't a problem on the training ground at Southampton or now at Spurs from what I have seen and read. Interviews he does seem to struggle a tiny bit, I think some of that may be due to nerves and not being the most confident public speaker. He always has that 'startled' look in eyes for instance etc.

Personally I wouldn't have had a problem if he'd continued with an interpreter, and then maybe did some English-speaking pieces for Spurs TV to 'connect' with the fans.

It not a problem at all. The majority of our squad don't speak English as there first language anyway!

I was only messing with the 'living up to your screen name' comment.

Meant the next part though. I think his english is fine and definitely superior to that spoken by 'Arry and Tim.

Because AVB spoke an extremely sophisticated and erudite form of English. And Sherwood is English.

So I find it d'oh worthy that you try to make a joke out of how those 2 spoke English.

Edit. I see now you were not referring to AVB but to Sherwood and to Redknapp.
Still doh worthy

AVB spoke lovely English (though had an annoying tendency to make up words).

Sherwood and Redknapp's English was on a par with the six year olds I read with once a week.

Ironically (unless you indeed meant that AVB's form of English was well informed/ knowledgable), you don't seem to know in which context you should use the word erudite.

A person can be erudite. They can even have poor language skills and be erudite. A person's grasp of a language cannot be erudite.

He definitely uses it to avoid answering questions in interviews. Like the one about Adebayor yesterday.

I must admit I find it hard to understand what he says in interviews, but I can't speak a foreign language so no criticism
from me.

I think I do know exactly how to use the word erudite and used it perfectly. His manner of speaking suggested (suggests) a great deal of knowledge. Is that okay?

Yes, that's better. You have now displayed that you can speak english to a higher level than 'Arry and Tim.

Agree, on the spot questions can be very hard to answer sometimes, and if you get a little stuck straight away it can spiral quickly.

If you have 30secs-1 minute to formulate a sentence before saying it, then it will be much clearer.

I would imagine that there are ZERO issues in training due to his English.
