At Liverpool.

We probably didn't try for Poulsen because Ramos said shortly after joining us that he wouldn't be plundering Sevilla for players, and because del Nido would have told us to spin on it.

This move is interesting for lots of reasons.

i) some reports are stating that Juve triggered Poulsen's release clause. If true, that destroys Del Nido's claim that Spanish release fee clauses only apply to Spanish clubs, and would clearly establish a precedent for us to use in the Capel case;

ii) my suspicion about why Poulsen didn't sign for us is either he didn't want to come to England (there have been reports suggesting this), or Ramos has his eyes on another DM;

iii) Ranieri sez he's now 99% happy with Juve's squad, so they won't be buying Xabi Alonso. So if Benitez still wants Barry, he has to sell Alonso to another club willing to pay north of £10 million. So, it's decision time for Benitez re the composition of his CM next season.

I think this is an odd move for Juve. What does Poulsen offer that Sissoko doesn't?

or that he wanted to continue playing in the Champions league for ateam that has a good chance of winning it

It would, but by the time we'd got it through the courts the window would be shut—also, I think clubs have to register their CL squads three weeks from now, and I assume the same applies to UEFA. Presumably we've decided it isn't worth the hassle, especially as Capel has said he's very happy at Sevilla and we're hardly short of left-sided options.

Speaking of happy players, Alonso said last week he loves it at Liverpool and has no desire to leave.

I'm just wondering if Tainio's presence at the training camp suggests that we may have had second thoughts about offloading him, or at least that he's a Plan B if we fail to sign ourselves a new DM.

I think that is being very generous to Juve.

I agree. Juve are lucky to even be in the CL.

Re: Poulsen, he's been muttering about being a more "creative" player than he's given credit for, but there's no way he's suddenly going to acquire Xabi Alonso's range of passing at the age of 28. So Juve's central pairing of Sissoko & Poulsen is not going to "out-pass" any decent team. :grin:

Personally, I'm rather glad we didn't sign Poulsen, partly because I think he'd get a lot of red cards in the EPL.

Joey - we still have no clues as to the likely make-up of our CM. Modric is still on his hols, and we haven't signed any CMs. However, if Liverpool can't afford Barry (because they can't sell Alonso), I'll be interested to see if Ramos makes a move for the Villa player.

Barry seems to have sunk his Villa career as surely as Kaboul has his Spurs one, so we have a very pretty little log-jam if Alonso doesn't want to move. If time's running short for UEFA registration and other targets are stalling it's a real possibility—and if Guzan's WP application falls through again we could kill two birds with one stone.

When do Liverpool need to register their players for CL?

When do Liverpool need to register their players for CL?

Players can be added (exchanged for existing squad members) after the CL Qualifying Rounds. Final registation appears to be 1/9/08 - ie after the transfer window closes:

17.13 List A has to be submitted by the following fixed deadlines:
a) 8 July 2008 (24.00 CET): for all matches in the first qualifying round;
b) 24 July 2008 (24.00 CET): for all matches in the second qualifying round;
c) 7 August 2008 (24.00 CET): for all matches in the third qualifying round;
d) 1 September 2008 (24.00 CET): for all further matches as from the first
match in the group stage up to and including the final.

Conditions for registration: List B
17.15 Each club is entitled to register an unlimited number of players on List B
during the season. The list must be submitted by no later than 24.00 CET on
the day before the match in question.
17.16 A player may be registered on List B if he is born on or after 1 January 1987
and has been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted
period of two years since his 15th birthday by the time he is registered with
UEFA. Players aged 16 may be registered on List B if they have been
registered with the participating club for the previous two years without
interruption.
Subsequent registration
17.17 For all matches from the start of the first knockout round, a club may register
a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the
current competition. Such registration must be completed by
1 February 2009 at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

my bet is poulsen and sissoko will only play together in away games especially in champions league away games....

its only a matter of time before we're linked with a swap deal involving
alonso+cash = keano

although doubt he'd except us and could go back to spain imo.

He's said recently he's very happy at Liverpool and has no desire to leave. According to Dan we made an enquiry as to whether he'd be available and were told he didn't want to know.

Back to player registration—if Liverpool and Arsenal want players in time for the 3rd Qualifying Round they've got just three weeks to sign them.

My friend is a Liverpool supporter and the both of us can not understand why the hell Benitez wants to sell Alonso and replace him with the more expensive and not as good Barry. I rate Alonso highly, I'd love him to come to us.

alonso is a bit slow for the prem (according to some liverpool fans i know) and possibly picks up niggly injuries, partly due to this.

maybe liverpool will offer us alonso and a few mill for keane?
otherwise rafa will not be able to sign barry and look a bit silly, as arsenal step in.. (although rafa still wins as he will have destabilised both villa and spurs in the process)

does anyone think ramos would take alonso + 5 million for keano?Eek

the only thing to come out of this would be if pool dont get barry and we somehow convince him to come to spurs to play DM. Seems quite fantasy football like

That would be funny, Barry would probably slot into our team nicely (could cover alot of postions and complement the likes of Modric and Jenas perfectly)

I think he is very overpriced but no more then Bent was last year and most English players are right now
