I agree, that's the kind of training I used to do for years. Train to the point of exhaustion and collapse. This is common in a lot endurance sports, just watch rowers or cyclists. I'm bemused this isn't common for footballers in pre season. I will confess though, that with the heat and humidity it would of hurt big time stylee.
yep, exactly. i play amateur australian rules football and we would do this type of stuff once or twice a week for 3 months during preseason and we're a long way from professional athletes.

i think I'm right in believing that a lot of English football clubs are pretty secretive around training sessions and so on? Maybe it's just because this session was so public that it shocked people, i don't know. But i bet this is a common occurrence behind closed doors at the training ground during pre-season.

lol this is such a weird discussion to me

yeah, the running looked tough, but isn't that the point of pre-season, to build both physical and mental toughness and conditioning? The body is capable of so much more than what the mind thinks its capable of and that's one of the points of these sessions. It looked hard mainly because of the endurance aspect but to be fair it was pretty low intensity with a bit of rest between each run.

i really don't get the odd complaints I've seen tbh. it's so weird to me. Where I'm from athletes in one of our local professional sports would look at this type of running as a walk in the park, tbh, and even amateurs would do this type of running in pre-seasons for their local amateur competitions

I think everyone is just a bit starved of football at the moment, so we are getting excited about little things. (y)

i have met Steve Nicol many times and I cannot believe his comments, when his NE patriots were at the best fitness was key

Re fitness levels watching Tour de France at the moment and according to this article tour cyclists have hearts nearly 40% larger than normal which helps with endurance , wonder what effect the methods of Gian Piero Ventrone will have on our squad.

So starved (and havent been like this in a fair few years as normally it takes me a while to get into the swing of things)... I am watching Man United hammer Liverpool 3-0 - super ecstatic

the worrying thing is that burley sounds normal compared to Nicol. Nicol is probably still pissed off about getting his arse ran off him in pre season in 83. The game has changed so much from the old days, christ when I played full time we didn’t see a ball for 2 weeks. Now it’s carefully measured by our staff to limit injuries but to get them as fit as possible. I actually like to see how hard they are working, gives me confidence that we can hit the ground running this coming season and let’s be honest if the players are in top shape it’s a good thing. League, cup, champions league, internationals and World Cup all coming up for a lot of our players. They are gonna need to be at the peak of their fitness levels

if Nicol was truly concerned about player health, he should worry about the fixture congestion that we will see later this year. Probably wont as the less games means less chance for him to get paid for his opinions.

as a fellow Scot, I’d describe nicol as a hefty bawbag

I'm not sure why people are making this a "Parrott won" thing.

Ive done these before professionally and this exercise is not a race, if we were to see the data it would probably show Sarr, Gill and Sanchez ahead of everybody else for the test as they ran the quicker times on pretty much every interval, clearly ahead of the rest.

Dier, Sarr etc were just strolling the last leg so Parrott didn't actually win anything although did a fantastic job along with Skipp, Sessegnon and everybody else in that group.

You know what's really annoying? I know the Arsenal pre season game result and the Utd-Pool pre season game result because there were front and centre on both the BBC and the Guardian front pages.

Our match today, nowhere to be seen on either front page.

Here in Singapore the majority of the fans are Liverpool and United, but only over a hundred turned up to welcome the arrival of Liverpool at the hotel. Over a hundred FFS. And it made it to the press here. We had far greater support when Spurs came in 2019 and they were more interested in reporting the likes of United and Juventus then. And now, the craze at South Korea, the airport alone had thousands. No one gives a damn.

It really sucks that Bissouma, Davies, Kulu and Perisic all are injured. All minor things but this is like 4 players that would probably start against Soton. Glad it's beginning of preseason so hopefully they'll still be ready but it sucks.

Bissouma has covid and Davies and Kulu were running yesterday. They'll all be back soon I'm sure. Perisic was injured when we signed him so we have to just live with it.

Personally I prefer this, the less attention we have the better. Quietly go about our business and preseason. Rather be seen as underdogs and be underestimated fully.

They'll be talking about us next season when we keep blowing teams away Conte style and charge up the table.

Sadly I think covid might be a big factor in opening few weeks of season. Not sure what current rules or criteria are but it’s nearly level of the big omicron surge earlier in year. So I’d definitely be expecting teams to be losing players to it unfortunately.

From the 2.5 hr training video that was posted on Youtube, Lucas played RWB for pretty much the entirety of the 11 vs 10 drills and mini match.

Both sides played mostly 343 but at the end I think the "reserve" side switched to 4 at the back to mimic Sevilla, but Lucas remained at RWB for the "first team".
