I have very limited legal knowledge but given how strict defamation laws are, I would assume the papers wouldn't publish names.

Don't know how it works in UK but if someone is arrested, won't it then be "open" for the public to get the files from police (arrest warrant)? And then share the name ?

Apparently not. I think they need to be charged.

It’s not just potential defamation but also guaranteed contempt of court if a newspaper reports the name, I think.

I don’t think we have long to wait. If a player that fits the mentioned criteria is missing from a travelling tour party with no reasonable explanation it’s gonna be pretty obvious. But this really is gutter reporting either state the player if you can’t they don’t report it.

To add to this:

if you are speculating about the identity, you could be violating defamation laws.

if you know the identity and publicly disclose the name, you are potentially committing a criminal offence.

Not in the papers they won’t name him, I’m sure there’s some sort of a law, I don’t think the Everton player has been named but everyone knows who it is.
Yup - speculation will mount when players go missing from training photos, or not with the team for international tours.

I think Gylfi's name came out when Everton suspended him.

It’s absolutely scandalous reporting. The paper and it’s journalists should be ashamed of themselves. It’s not like it’s something we need to know. They’re just doing it for hits and clicks.

I would add that we should remember how the Bissouma accusations played out - accusations made, and then eventually, Bissouma was released from bail conditions with no further investigation.

Its possible the same thing occurs with this incident. I think Bissouma was photographed getting arrested - which put his name out there.

Right now a woman has made an allegation of rape/sexual assault, and the police are rightly following up.

Do we know the alleged victim is a woman?

I’ve heard from a police mate of mine. Be interesting to see if it’s true or not. Won’t be naming any names.

If I remember correctly, Icelandic media mentioned him. I assume the laws regarding these sort of things are different in Iceland from the UK or something like that.

Today is, most PL clubs start of preseason training.
At the very least, our club admin is constantly tweeting stuffs all day long on various items- had there been any involvement from our player, it would be tone deaf otherwise.
Scanning London clubs official tweets - most been active, except Arsenal who haven't tweeted anything for 8hrs - may be its nothing. will need to see.
In all previous cases, club tries to get forward with some kind of vague stmt before speculation hits. Everton said 'It simply suspended a first team player'. Brighton also said 'one of its player was arrested'
