Keeping the transfer discussion thread on-topic is becoming more and more of an issue and dealing with the inevitable PMs from people who lose their access is almost a full-time job.

We think things work well as they are but we're considering if the effort is worth it.

An alternative we're considering is where to have two threads running:

A "Transfer Discussion Thread" to replace the ITK Discussion Thread.
This would be a more relaxed version of the current discussion thread. We still don't want it full of twitter crap but we won't heavily police it so it'll be more free-flowing but also very much discussing the latest news. The player threads will still exist for more general discussion of the players and we'll shepherd people into those as necessary. We'll encourage people to use the Spam rating to self-moderate it a bit.

A "Transfer News Ticker" as a new (locked) thread.
This will be locked and we'll need to recruit a few people who'll have permission to post into it. The idea is that any ITK goes in here (i.e. every blue post) as well as anything considered real news (e.g. tweets/articles from Ally or other respected journos/sources). This should be the place to catch up quickly on what's been said recently.

We've tried similar to the above before and it didn't really work but that was years ago and things have changed since then so it might be worth revisiting.

As we've found before, whichever way we do it, people will complain so we thought the fairest way to gauge opinion was to put it to a vote. Depending on how tight the result is, we might not necessarily go with the winner and might need to think up a 3rd option to satisfy more people.

Just to add that this isn't a venue for your lightbulb moment genius alternatives, if you have one of those, forget it. We've tried it :D

Plus the brain cell requirement to even have a lightbulb moment would require a pooling together of resources and i'm not sure there'd be enough of you online at the same time ;)

Am I going mad or did there used to be an ITK thread and a transfer discussion thread?

Actually forget that. I think I am going mad.

I like the idea of a news ticker.

Back in the day, every bit of ITK would get posted in the RO, which made it easy for people to catch up on what had gone on during the day.

That doesn’t happen so much any more, and you inevitably have to wade through pages of bollocks to see if you can spot the updates.

The blue backgrounds have helped when skimming through, but it’s a sub-optimal solution.

The news ticker is nice and would be welcome, but I just think it's a shame that it seems to be untenable to keep the RO up to date with all the ITK as I enjoy discussions and would welcome a more loose format than the current itk discussion thread.

I like this idea.

TBH I don't even read the main transfer thread any more, I much prefer the player threads with free-flowing chat.

The "transfer news ticker" sounds something like I suggested on an obscure thread recently... Great minds thinking alike, and all that.

Yeah, I miss the excitement of logging on and seeing there’s been 4 or 5 updates in the RO

Only issue was a few of the ITK didn’t like there stuff going in the RO

Have to be honest, I kind of like it as it is. I agree with Freeki that it’d be good if stuff got moved to the RO more often. But so far this summer things have been pretty smooth.

If everyone just thought for a second before posting a comment in the ITK thread it’d be much easier to see the actual info.

It's impossible now. The way ITK is given has changed. In the 'good' old days you'd get a post here and there from an ITK and that'd be it for a while. Easy peasy to keep the RO updated. Now, not only do they post more than once, they are spreading it across a number of threads, it's impossible.

Plus this lot can't shut the fuck up :D

I think its a good idea.

I understand the need and challenges with policing the current thread. However I do think it can sometimes stop a natural conversation that flows between subjects

I’ve always liked the idea of a somewhat-looser discussion thread. This forum is the main place I have to discuss Spurs, and it always feels bad to have an idea or see a bit of news and come here only to feel like there’s nowhere I can actually have a conversation about it. And surely I’m not the only one who largely avoids posting in the ITK thread on the off chance of an innocent comment snowballing into an off-topic ban party. Maybe it will devolve and we’ll all regret it but I think it’s worth a try.

This will literally never happen, so…

Although I have noticed recently that the ITK thread is less people talking complete bollocks, and more milk monitors filling the thread enthusiastically chastising others for talking complete bollocks

True. I say give it a go then. Worse case scenario is you have to change things back.
