This has probably already been mentioned, but this should be the 'Race for the Title' thread until we can't win it.

Have some faith, folks!

Monday 27th August vs Man Utd is going to big psychological boost if we win. If we put down a marker there everyone's mood will be up. To win the league or challenge we've got to take points off our rivals. Back at 'home' again should help us on that front, and in away games a scalp or two.

Away win at Man U would be massive for our team.....

Seems overly scousish to me. It's better to upgrade the title if we're still in the mix around christmas.

I was joking, Leicester is always the example people give when someone says punching higher is impossible.
Ah yes true but I think the general consensus was that was a one off and unlikely to be repeated again, I think only the very extreme optimist would consider us as in a title challenge at the moment.

Haven't commented in here yet but personally I think we'll slip to 5th this year.

Whilst I don't believe we have suddenly become the worst team in the world as a result of not signing anyone (like others on here) I equally worry that we haven't done enough to keep up with the teams around us.

City will win the league easily this year. Miles ahead of everyone last year and likely to be the same again.

Liverpool have splashed the cash and I think will probably come second this season. They've got a great first team and decent depth as well.

United depends a lot on Mourinho and if (when) he sulks off to another moneybags club but they've got a deep squad and again have strengthened in the summer (if not as much as I expected).

Chelsea have signed a couple of players and I think will benefit from being shot of Conte who was clearly dragging the whole club down last season.

And I think all four have a better chance of top 4 than us.

Our trump card is that familiarity means our team doesn't need time to gel etc etc, but we are still very light in a couple of areas, and I think as a result we'll drop points in games where we shouldn't even if we do get some big results along the way.

If things start going a little wrong, its not out of the realms of possibility that we could strengthen in Jan

being back home will hopefully be a bonus, and hopefully have the majority of the stadium rocking. the only possible downside though will be out of our 1st 4 at home we will of played 3 of last seasons top 5, plus the away game v Man U.

That is extremely unlikely as the official statement normally is one of player's of succiefient quality and or price can be found in January, with the club struggling to buy during the summer it would seem almost impossible that anyone was brought in during January.

Imagine if we come through that unscathed :nailbiting:

I am going to predict 4th

first of all....we literally are the same team as last season....a team not much changed from the last 2-3 seasons. With the same world level manager.

I think it's ok to predict that this season we will be very similar to recent seasons. We will grind out our results against all the mid table and bottom feeder teams...in fact grind is the wrong word...maybe better we will glide past them...put them away. We will go toe-to-toe with the other teams in the top 6. In some games we will mess them up, in other games we will get messed up. We will do alright, but not good enough away against the top 6 to be title challengers.

3rd is realistic. However, I also think there is a good chance we will go deep into one or more of the cup competitions. This is where the WC and the bizarre transfer window fail will hurt us. This will stretch the squad. There will be injuries and fatigue. We will lose some points because of this which is why I say 4th....although could be squeaky close to missing out on CL altogether.

Guess one further prediction, there are going to be some very long Cups vs League position threads on here this season

Agree on Chelsea being a dark horse. They are solid at the back as long as this keeper is decent. Lots of midfield options Kante Jorginho kovacic could be a revelation. It really is just the class striker they lack. I’ve no idea why everyone’s written them off.

Because...

1) New coach with very different playing style.

2) Squad best designed to play back three with wing backs.

3) Massively inconsistent players.

4) Lack of a top quality striker.

No one denies their midfield is strong. But they've played one game, let's not get too ahead of ourselves.
