Racist abuse in our stands, we need to face it if it’s there.

Not condoning this incident for one tiny moment but a thought occurred to me after the game - it's a great way to close out a game and psychologically wipe the floor with your opponents and few minutes remaining.

'Professional' footballers ?

However, Italian football is rife with it so I doubt he just invented it
agreed but City recently apart, monkey chants are a thing I’ve not come across I was dubious from the start that this would be found to be true. Fingers crossed the authorities continue to find nothing and I also hope Rudiger was just mistaken in this. I can’t believe he would make something like this up for him he must have genuinely thought he heard something like that. It is ok to be wrong and in this case in particular I hope he is.

Not read all the posts but two things strike me: will the Chelsea fans be investigated for hissing; and could it be feasible that the boos echoing around the ground - out of time sync - sound like monkey chants? Given his injury feigning etc ... just hypothesising ..

Before i get slated, maybe just maybe Rudiger exaggerated what he thought he had seen & tried to deflect from his play acting which contributed to Son's sending off. The replay of the sending off on all 4 big screens certainly made him public enemy #1.

BBC reporting that the government is prepared to take action over racism in football.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50893279
Now I don't have a problem with governments taking action in these circumstances but does the irony of this escape anybody? I can just see words flashing in front of my eyes, words like Pot and Kettle and Black and hypocracy and Good God almighty have they no fucking shame?
Some good words in it from Jan Vertonghen as well.
How dare the government get involved; they need to get their own house in order first: Boris anyone ?

On the replays, Rudiger himself is pointing at the crowd, mimicking the monkey arms gesture, and then tapping his temple to indicate he's seen it.

There's every chance some twat got carried away and did make that gesture. We were all pretty incensed by his play acting, and then slamming Dele(or was it Verts) in the face, which went unpunished.
I think he was pointing at his ears and making the gesture to demonstrate what he thought he heard. I'm pretty sure if anyone had been making monkey gestures or chants someone mear would have reported it, the tv cameras or cctv would have evidence.

I'm yet to be convinced - I would hate to be proven wrong but have never seen monkey antics in 35 years going to Spurs. Have heard the occasional verbal slur - Adebayor was a particular favourite for those idiots but never seen anyone taunt a player with monkey chants.

Think this must be case of player hearing "who who who the y*ds are" or "who who who let the y*ds out" from a hostile away crowd and thinking the "who" noises were monkey noises failed at him.

Seems ludicrous the government is weighing in when there is no evidence to back up the claim and obvious room for confusion given we have more than one chant that could easily be misconstrued.

I don't think Rudiger is lying. This may just simply be a case of mishearing something. I myself can sometimes hear a word or phrase wrong from a distance. That isn't to say we don't have racists in our stands, just on this occasion nothing has come up to suggest there was anything. Did read a Chelsea fan was arrested for racist abuse towards Son. I think because of that and Rudiger's accusation at the time that was when the UEFA protocol was then put in place and announcements made thereafter.

This is 2019, mere days from 2020 and this crap is rife in our sport, and country. I want to go and watch football to enjoy (result aside) feel safe and have friendly banter with fellow Spurs fans and oppo fans too. You can have a rivalry sure, but keep it civilised. I'm losing love for the sport and this country quite rapidly.

When someone gets accused of breaking the law there’s an investigation, potential charges and then they have a fair trial. However, and I’m not condoning racism for one minute but when there’s an accusation of racism in a packed football stadium there’s an assumption of guilt. It’s such a sensitive subject that the current response is to panic which exasperates matters.

The club have since investigated the matter and to date they’ve been unable to identify conclusive evidence of racist chanting/remarks by Spurs fans. Yet the press, social media etc are again assuming it happened. Rudiger was being booed by 1000s of fans for cheating yet he can clearly hear racist chanting by a suspected minority. Look at the Bulgaria England game, a small group of thugs were chanting monkey noises and they stuck out like a saw thumb. Yet in one of the most advanced stadiums in the world, with shed loads of cctv, Sky Sports tv cameras, stewards and fellow fans... to date there’s no evidence to support Rudiger’s accusation. If it has happened then said person(s) need to be punished. Whereas the Chelsea fan who’s been arrested for racially abusing Son, well that’s barely made the news.

If he has misheard something and it can be proved will he be made to apologise to our club for the fuss he has caused for nothing?

The name of our club has been dragged through the mud today yet so far the only person at the stadium who heard anything at that time is him.

Booo booo sounds a lot like “ohhh ohhh”

given the diversity in our fan base, I would be shocked if that happened in our stands that someone would not have said something to the perpetrator

just my take, wasn’t there so I don’t know. Maybe I think too much of our fans, but I’ve never seen or heard anything racist in the slightest , we aren’t that type

I was sat in the that corner of the shelf, 9 rows back. Definitely no chanting and I didn’t hear anything racist. Lots of booing and plenty on c-bombs dropped.

I like many others took this as gospel and felt it compounded what was a deal day for the club.

Now it seems the reality is that it was either something very minor or non existent.

Even if it is something minor I hope any involved are never allowed near the new stadium again (even to see guns n roses)
However If this turns out to be nothing then it could be a case of the boy who cried (insert applicable animal)

Wonder if the media ire would transfer to Chelsea if that was the case... :cautious:

Not going to say it couldn’t have happened, after all, we had a “fan” who threw a banana skin on the pitch during the game against Arsenal last season.

However, there seems to be a lack of evidence to support the claims and I would like to think if one of our fans was racially abusing a player, someone around him would report it. Sure as shit know I would...

We will just get accused of a cover up...
