Ramos' position really needs to be questioned; as any Manager they’re responsible for motivation, instilling confidence, and unquestionably team selection and tactics. Is it not evident this has been sub-standard on all 4 points from the current set-up? Is Ramos really addressing these issues effectively and in the right manner? Is some of this lost in translation? Asides pre-season, it is a problem not new just to this season; we’ve repeatedly seen an overall lacklustre, below par performance where each game at best has only offered the chance of a few players giving a notable performance.
Although Ramos was unable to get the complete squad he desired after the short sightedness of Commoli and the Board (the architect’s of the situation) - whom should all be in the spotlight - if not more so than Ramos - I, really cannot believe the Spurs management as a whole realistically thought it would be a great idea to nigh on change the entire squad and expect immediate results!
It could also be argued in Ramos’ favour that Spurs’ failure to address the Berbatov issue and the dithering on Pavlychencho and Arshavin has not done him any favours too. Not securing Pavlychencho before his UEFA game is still baffling. Why not buy him before Berbatov left? Aston Villa bought in Steve Sidwell - now injured - as a replacement for Barry whom ended up staying.
Slightly deviating as this thread is not to focus around the mistakes of the Club and Commoli in the summer transfer window which undeniably has had a knock on effect with an incomplete squad. Though it surely shouldn’t have impacted to the extent where the players Ramos is left to work with are playing at this unacceptable level of performance? You have to look at some of the other teams in the EPL that are performing i.e...hate to say it...Hull! They lost their key player Campbell whom was instrumental in their promotion last season – look at how they’re playing without him!
Ramos is right; it will take some time for the team to gel, but at this stage of the team’s development is it necessary, almost at random to keep rotating the players? This would be understandable with a settled squad. It poses the question whether Ramos even knows his best 11. Aside from the injuries, a talented squad, arguably not quite balanced, should Ramos just pick or settle on his best 14 players and get them working as a unit with confidence and each player given the opportunity to play a full match? Is it surprising some of recent signings are bereft of confidence when often substituted after a poor performance? Each player must feel they can't put a foot wrong, living in the fear that they’re going to be pulled off the pitch at any point. Look at Defoe’s confidence now he has been given an opportunity to prove himself. And, if they’re not fit don’t play them.
Surely it would not be a knee jerk reaction to seriously examine his position after reviewing the results since the Carling Cup? And, how long should we realistically give Ramos?
By the way Derby County who got relegated last season had 5 points at this stage of the season. It really looks difficult to see when the next win will come....
