CC 5 Terrible pat at Jonas's cross 1st half and very weak against Colccini's goal. Some redemption with later saves
Hutton 6 Tested greatly by Jonas and too easily out-foxed by Coloccini for his goal
Gallas 7 Not up against quality strikers but looked composed and flawless
Dawson 6 Turned too easily by Ameobi for his strike and Ranger walked right through him for his effort
Bale NET
Lennon 7 Made some great opportunities but again often failed with a final ball. Impressive run and finish for the goal
Jenas 5 A bit part player.
Modric 8 The centre of all our play. Constantly on the ball, finding openings and unlucky when his shot hit the bar
Pienaar 6 Nice touches and links with Modric et al, but hideous when in good positions, as when he ballooned both a shot and cross
VDV 6 Went down a lot under challenges. Too deep and not able to threaten. Beautiful skill to set up JD just before HT
Defoe 6 Wasteful with his openings. The chance before HT should have been finished. Did give us more of a threat with his shooting power

Bassong 7 Difficult for him to come on so early at an earlier club. Attacking isn't his forte but a reliable display
Crouch 6 Brought on too late. Offered the usual effort and touches but little goal threat
Kranjcar 6 Very late to come on, but looked energetic, passed well and eager to create something

I agree with your ratings. Attacking wise, Modric, Lennon and Pienaar did well. VDV was below par, Cudicini should've done better for their goal. Modric as MOM, he was very unlucky not to score. And I felt the referee had a poor game, many decisions went against us.

Gallas- 6.5 generally solid
Dawson 7-slightly better than Gallas I thought

Lennon 7.5 stepped up to the plate
Jenas 4.5 looked out of position, showed how much Palacios is needed.
Modric 8 - a few inches away from goal of the season
Pienaar 7 very good debut I hope he doesn't have to get used to playing with no strikers
VDV-I forgot him 6
Defoe 5 forlorn, poor movement
Crouch 4 does he know he's supposed to score goals
Niko 7 looked dangerous and I'd like to see him get a runout ahead of JD and PC

Cudicini 6 - Poor for the goal, two saves after that kept us in it.

Hutton 4 - Given the run around by Jonas all day I thought. Then got done for the goal. Not a good afternoon.
Gallas 5 - Felt Newcastle front two got the better of him and Dawson today.
Dawson 5 - As Above
Bale N/A

Lennon 7 - Looked threatening but final ball not always great, vital goal.
Jenas 6 - Not as bad as some make out, helped us keep possession well in the first half.
Modric 6 - Kept possession well, but knocked off the ball a bit easily today at times.
Pienaar 5 - Not the best debut, sure he will show more.

Van der Vaart 6 - Quiet, same as Modric really.
Defoe 5 - Quiet, missed chance at end of the first half but involved in goal at the end.

Bassong 6 - Did a job at left back.
Kranjcar 6 - Looked quite bright when he came on.
Crouch 6 - Infuriating at times, flicked the ball on well for the goal though.

Modric and VDV the same mark? Bonkers. Modric was everywhere, literally everywhere. VDV was very very poor. Modric would probably get an 8, VDV would be lucky to get a 5.

Certainly not at his best and, as you say, brushed off the ball quite a bit.

I was annoyed with Lennon today. I'm sure he'll get the plaudits but I thought most of his runs and decision making amounted to nothing.

Totally agree, makes you wonder what people are watching sometimes even if it is about opinions.

Dissappointed by most of them and JJ has had a chance in the last two away games and made very little impression after showing some decent stuff in a bit part sort of way this season.

Lets hope Palacios, Ekotto and Bale are back for Blackburn.

CC 6 Bad keeping on the goal, not good at crosses. A couple of good saves though.
Hutton 5 Terrible, terrible defending for their goal. Bad deliveries going forward.
Gallas 7 Solid all game.
Dawson 6 Below par.
Bale NET
Lennon 7 Gets a point for a very well taken goal but was hit and miss today.
Jenas 5 Just not good enough for where we want to be.
Modric 8 Best player on the pitch by far
Pienaar 6 Don't know why we've signed him.
VDV 6 Some good touches but played too deep at times and was lost a bit
Defoe 5 Why can't he ever just use the inside of his foot and place a ball in the net instead of going for power? Fucking frustrating. Poor finishing.
Bassong 7 Solid
Crouch 6 Not good enough
Kranjcar 6 Ok, didn't have much time.

Jesus, now I know the one-eyed man is king in the land of the blind.

Ever thought closing the stable door after the horse has bolted is leaving it a bit late?

Keeping us in the game is one thing, maybe not edging us out of it might be much better.

Not going to give ratings but some of the marks given to Mods and VDV were stupid.

Mods was absolutely different class, he is growing in stature every game. What a player.

I thought VDV was very good, the problem was that his work was done in the wrong part of the pitch and so I guess you could criticise him for that. However, if we aren't getting the ball forward then what is he going to do?

I thought Defoe was bloody awful yet again in an away game. He contributes nothing. Poor movement, no anticipation, nothing. If we had a decent striker you would see the fruits of the work that VDV does from deeper positions. We simply have to get a striker that can do something with the ball. Just look at some of the inter-play between vdv and mods, can you imagine what a decent striker would contribute to that? I think Pav would have been the better choice today.

I love the little guy and thought first half he had us ticking nicely and we kept possession well. That didnt happen 2nd half and the Newcastle midfield got about him IMO and literally forced him off the ball a number of times, so his mark got bought down. It was only in the last 15 mins that we got any pressure back on them.
Looking back VdV's mark was a little high, although it was him who played in Defoe just before half-time wasnt it? That was a great bit of play.

Great goal from Lennon today, kept his cool and picked his spot. Good to see him with the confidence back to take on defenders again but I wish he would chase back when he loses the ball, sometimes it might be 4 yards from him yet he just ambles along, pre-madonna in the making.
Plus his crossing was shit today, good goal tho.
