Well I thought we played well last night and even though we did get lucky with a few decisions we were defintley the better team and deserved our win. I thought we passed the ball well in parts even though we could of kept the ball better but fair play to Twenete they were no push over. I thought they actually passed the ball quite well and looked dangerous but just did not have that final bit upfront.

I thought we did get a bit lucky with the first pen and the last pen which we got at a great time as it was 2.1 an they were putting pressure on but the 2nd pen I do really think it was a penatly? Does anyone else agree? Sky said it was not but too me it looked like it was a blaitant.

But how good was Van Der Fucking Vart befoe he got sent off? He was everywhere, he was really up for it. Qualily signing. It was stupid he got himself sent off and we are deffo going to miss him against INTER! Eek

Well I thought everyone played well and was so pleased to see GOMESback in goal. I think Bale could of passed a bit more to Van Der Vart in the first half instead of looking for that cross too bale as VDV got into some good positions.

now BRING ON INTER! COYS!

I can't quite believe 8 people have given Pav MoM. Are you totally devoid of any footballing nous ???

Gomes 7 - Great save early on. Not too much to do after that (apart from a poor punch towrads the end).

Hutton 6.5 - Played well but needs to be better at tracking players.

King 7 - Usual

Bassong 6 - A few errors. Could probably do with more game time.

Ekotto 7 - Good as usual, although he had a couple of the all-too-familiar 'switch off' moments last night.

Huddlestone 6.5 - Average to start with, but grew as the game went on. Loved the coolness in our pen area towards the end.

Modric 7 - Again, took him a while to get going, but worked hard and played well.

VdV 8.5 - Awesome. Funny thing is, I actually said that 'arry should take him off, five minutes before the second yellow, as he was so fired up! Regardless, MoM. Minus 0.5 for the missed pen and minus 1 for send-off. Otherwise would have been as close to a 10 as poss.

Bale 8.49 - Fantastic. Just behind VdV.

Crouch 6.5 - Fine. Should have converted one of the chances he had.

Pav (1st half) 3 - he completed a pass. (2nd half) 6 - two good pens, improved on the ball. Problem is that he has a rubbish first touch, struggled completing simple passes and was going down waaay too easily. To summ up - AAAARRRGGGHHH so farkin frustrating.

Jenas 6.5 - Did well when he came on.

Keane and Lennon - no time. Although I would have liked Lennon to have a go at their LB, who was already on a yellow.

I think the people that doesn't get excited with this win (mis)underestimate Twente - very strong side that put in a good effort (and remember, they came from behind to take the lead and then eventually draw against Inter). Top quality to beat them 4-1 with 10 men for last 30 mins.

Ratings:

Gomes 8 - 7 for the performance, an extra point for being back and giving us a lot of confidence. He just doesn't look like he's gonna concede and dealt with everything thrown at him - apart from the goal which was almost unsavable - with ease and confidence.

BAE 7 - Solid as always, a few top quality passes, but also at least one moment of drifting off that could've given them a goal. Works really really well with Bale. Typical BAE performance really.
King 8 - Same as Gomes really, an average 7 performance from the skipper but an extra point for what he brings to the team with his mere presence.
Bassong 6(.5) - Decent game but looks shaky with marking and positioning at times. Not yet at his best from last season.
Hutton 6 - Energetic. Ran his socks off. Still to easy to get pass, especially when wingers cut in. Limited end product going forward.

Bale 8 - MOM. Agreed he had a sub-optimal start, but think he was clearly instructed to get it in towards Crouch early. 2nd half brilliant.
Modric 7 - Good performance from Modders, really shows he's best in the middle. Commentators claimed he was invisible but he was excellent at keeping possession.
Huddlestone 7 - Not a good 1st half, lucky not to be sent off. Vastly improved in the second half, good game all in all.
VDV 7 - Biggest talent we've had since Ginola. Took his goal superbly and was a constant threat throughout the game. Penalty miss and sending off takes him down from 8.

Crouch 6 - Good header down for VDV's goal, won quite a few headers and a pen but still didnt think he did enough. With a bit more aggresion would've scored at least one.
Pav 7 - Amazed he came one for the second half, but really upped his game. Such a confidence player. He got better after the first and then immense after the second penalty. All he needs is goals and he'll come good again. Second highest (longest) runner (after Bale (or was it Hutton?)) last night

Subs: Havent seen the games Jenas have played this season, to me he came in an didnt do much. One particularly bad pass, otherwise ok, but still seems to lack that vision you need to an effective CM to me. Keane should'be passed to Lennon at least once, at least he's eager to prove himself. For Lennon would've hoped for slightly more as there was plenty of space towards the end, but in fairness didnt have much time. Looked lively, though.

Harry: Loved the team selection. We need to play with two strikers at WHL. Good move to take out Crouch instead of Pav..

All in all, job well done! Now bring on Villa!!

Personally speaking, I really fucking enjoyed that.
It wasn't always sparkling football, but it was rip snorting, full bloodied Champions League tie that had a bit of everything (including the best linesman we've ever had at WHL). Skill, drama, verve, niggle, controversy and goals.
Tactically, the most influential decision Redknapp made tonight was moving Bale back out to LM. Can there be any doubt that that is his best position now. The disapointing thing for me was that he reverted to the Huddlestone/Modric CM pairing which means we don't get to see Modric at his free moving best. He was still good but he was shackled somewhat and I'm fucking dying to see us play a 4231 with Modric, Bale and VDV interacting. We saw the worst and best of Huddlestone tonight; first half he should have cost us at least one goal when he was caught pondering and was poor positionally as well at times. That initial lack of pace or ability to change direction quickly will always make him vulnerable and at when the opposition have the ball he can be a liability. BUT....His second half performance was very good; as good a second half as I've ever seen him have. He worked really hard and every aspect of his game was good.
I was a little disappointed with Twente, but we did play well, we were positive and even when down to 10 men we played some good stuff. We were helped by the benefit of a couple of decisions that might not have gone our way on another night (hand ball/Hudd elbow) and they fucked up a couple of good chances but overall we were good and deserved our win.

My MOTM......(drum roll maestro please)......Huddlestone.

Ratings:

Gomes 7.95 - One outstanding save at 0-0 after their guy stripped Hudd and ran through. Otherwise good. Great to have him back

Hutton 7.5 - Good game.

King 7.4 - Good game

bassong 7.4 - Good game

Ekotto 7.2 - Good game

VDV 7.75 - If he'd stayed on the pitch he would have pissed MOTM but he was a bit stupid to do what he did. It could have cost us. Prior to that he was fantastic. Clever, industrious and scored a beautiful goal of the highest calibre.

Modric 7.5 - Good, tidy, efficient and provided some lovely touches. His passing in tight corners is better than Huddelstone's, but he was somewhat hindered - offensively - tonight by the formation and tactics.

Huddlestone 8 - Possibly a first for me, and slightly by default as it would definitely have been VDV if he'd stayed on. But that said I actually thought Huddlestone put in, overall, one of the best 90's I've ever seen him put in. Gave the ball away more than Modric, and once was almost fatal, but his head never went down, and down to ten men he worked his bollocks off, and also played a couple of really nice passes.

Bale 7.9 - Excellent going forward. Lets just buy a top drawer LB and forget this bollocks about him being a LB. He doesn't relish the defensive side of football - and even as a LM he must improve this side of his game - but offensively he's pretty mustard.

Crouch 6.75 - Worked hard but not his night overall. Beautiful knock down for VDV's goal though - which is what he's all about.

Pavlyuchenko 7 - Was lively, stuck his penalties away well and did well to set up Modric and also made more passes than Crouch (which rarely happens for any of our strikers) but he has the body strength of a small child.

Jenas 6.5 - Spot on decision by Redknapp. Came on, didn't do anything spectacular, but chased people down and stopped them making the most of their extra man. Energy was just what was needed at the time.

Keane 4 - He had two fantastic chances to do something simple and fucked them both up.

Redknapp 7 - I look forward to him playing Modric/VDV/Bale in the "3" and his Hudd/Mod Cm pairing could have backfired but circumstances and good play ensured it didn't. Credit for putting Bale back to LM, The subs were all spot on at the right times. So more plusses than minuses.

Agree with most of that, but I thought Hudd was sold a little short for their one on one by King or Bassong, I can't remember exactly. Yes if he were faster, he may have controlled it but I did think the pass was short and you can always be quicker. Still one mistake, and a fantastic save saved him as well as the ref for his arm. He did excellently to hold on to the ball but maybe a little too long and if he released it earlier he wouldn't have lashed out. Two mistakes at a stretch, but for me he was MoM too.

What pleased me more was our pressing, generally. Often we pushed the ball back and won the ball if not by cruncing tackles but by forcing them to give the ball away out of position. That is why for me we should do it more, not because everyone can say 'wow he works hard' but because it is the best way to win the ball back and mount attacks. We were also excellent at intecepting the ball as Modric and Hudd as CM partners did very well as well as using the ball, their body and intelligence to get away from two or three players throughout the game, as well as Hudd's trick at the end in our own penalty area.

VDV was stupid and it may deny us having any chance of getting anything in Milan but we may not have anyway so it might not be a bad one to miss.

Bale my MOM. VDV was our most dangerous player. Sending off was totally unnecessary. Passionate no doubt but rather ill-disciplined and could easily have undone all his good work leaving us a man down with 30 minutes to go.

Huddlestone was poor in the first half but stepped up in the second half. Good performance all round and good result thanks in part to some generous refereeing decisions.

Great result and great performance by the team.

I thought we were shaky in defence but that is only to be expected given its patched up nature and over all they coped as well as could have been hoped against a very good Twente attack.

There were some curious "game of two halves" individual performances which I noticed.

I thought Huddlestone and Pav in particular improved after the break and especially when we were down to ten men. I'm not sure why?

What I do know is if Pav could play the lone striker role as well as he did in the last half hour all the time then that becomes a viable formation. It's a big "if" though.

I'm also unconvinced that playing two up made a positive difference to the win. I didn't see Pav getting involved much at all up to the sending off. Neither goal involved him in the build up and nor did the missed pen in the first half. Could Lennon have contributed less?

We then went on to score two goals down to 10 with him playing the lone striker.

I don't really know what to make of it, but I'm worried that credit seems to be going to playing two strikers because it may entrench event further people's belief that playing one up with VdV in the hole is not as threatening as playing two strikers. I'm really not sure that's the case.

I thought Bale, VDV and Huddlestone were outstanding, confident show from Bassong too.

People say Hudd has a quiet first half, but I thought he showed a proper DM display, made some hugely important blocks (despite one bad moment) and when Bassong or King went up the field Hudd's covering was exceptional, he clearly did a lot of work that went unnoticed by some!

Nice to see Bale back to his affective self and reminding Harry why he needs to play LM!

Bale, VDV, and THudd outstanding. Just want to make mention of Gomes. The save on Ruiz's break away early in the match was huge!! I don't think Cudicini would've made that save. Ledders was great as well, but I think Spurs cope pretty well when Gomes is playing with Ledders out. Not for the 90 minutes, but that save made all the difference. Welcome back "Octopus"

Overall i thought are defensive was a bit nervy although just about coped.

Gomes 7 Made the save that counted and was otherwise not really that tested.
Hutton 6 Tried too many runs forward into nowhere and out of position too much defensively.
King 7.5 Solid
Bassong 7 Pretty decent performance
Benny 7 Typical Benny really but hit a sweet looping through ball up to VdV.
Huddlestone 6.5 Poor in the first half and put our defence under too much pressure.
Modric 7 Did things pretty tidely but never really shined either.
VDV 8 Classy player who got carried away in the moment by the looks of it.
Bale 9 Always a threat and worked his arse off as always.
Pav 6.5 Didn't really do a lot other than take his pens well.
Crouch 6 Not on of his better games and i don't think he and Pav together works.

Jenas 6.5 Made a really sloppy pass but did what was needed to make up the numbers in the middle when it was important.

I thought Hudd was excellent, not sure why the low marks here. How many times did he throw himself in the way of potential shots? Can remember 3 in the space of minutes!

Sure, his passing wasn't what it could have been at times but we were playing effectively from the wings. Second half he was better still. Thought he was really impressive.

Bale was excellent again.

VDV superb and should not have been sent off for me, second booking was silly. He seems intent on showing us he's not a "luxury" player and that he's willing to put himself about in the tackles. That's excellent and everything but not at the expense of getting sent off, please! Soft red card, really.

Defensively we were a little naive/poor at times. A better team would have punished us with a few of those chances. We need to cut that out against Inter otherwise Eto'o et al will put 4 or 5 on us.

Great to have Gomes back VDV brilliant but a bit too passionate . Lucky with the decisions . Excellent entertainment . Strange game of widely differing moods .

Well done to everyone and Pav was great towards the end . Because of his own ways tho, this will have no bearing on how he'll play next match !

BUT people here are horribly blind to his atrocious penalties . Pure and simple 50% per centers , he can only score 50% of his penalties this way . Worse than Defoe and that is saying something . Bad thing if the team have learnt yesterday that Pav is a pen taker and VDV is not .

VdV may turn out to be one of the clubs greatest signings i think. The guy has it all. Shame he got sent off, needlessly, think the writing was on the wall 5 mins before he went when he sythed down one of their guys on our right hand side.....always walking a tight rope.

I was just amazed by his passion and commitment, for someone who has only been here 5 minutes it was brilliant to see. Before KO he was last off the pitch practicing his free kicks and then was first out (by a long way) after half time to get himself going again.

Also never realised he had such pace! LEGEND!

Ratings -

Gomes - 6 - didn't do much wrong, clearly wasn't fit, kicking was poor.

Hutton - 7 - grew into the game well
King - 7 - solid
Seb - 7 - solid
BAE - 7.5 - impressive, supported Bale well and a couple of great chases back to cover others.

Modric - 7 - did well
VdV - 8 - awesome, silly sending off otherwise nailed on MoM.
Hudd - 7 - the guys passing is just brilliant.
Bale - 8.5 - MoM, slow start but got better and better, terrorised their right back!

Pav - 7 - improved as game went on, last 30 mins was excellent.
Crouch - 6 - plenty off knock downs but its as tho others dont expect him to win headers as there is rarely anyone close by.....not his fault i guess!

JJ - 7 - love him or hate him, it was the right change.
Lennon - 6 - ok
Keane - 5 - frustrating even in his 5 minutes....playing for team keane, not Spurs.

harry - 10 - selection bang on, right subs at right time, well done.
