people saying Rose garbage after he had his first competitive game in midweek on the biggest pitch in the world, running literally end to end for 90 mins with disrupted recovery time are possibly being a touch harsh. If we had another CB fit he wouldn’t have played

It’s one of those where performance was not important, 3 points the only thing to matter.

Is performance ever important? It's getting 3 pts

Kane for me was the MOM.

Worked tirelessly, his hold up play was superb, often with 3 guys hanging off him.

Got the match winning assist.

Against a side with only survival on their mind we certainly did ourselves few favours at the sharp end of moves. Trippier and Rose had so much of the ball but were continually over elaborating, taking an extra touch or not delivering well enough from good positions. We looked to get the creativity from Lamela and Dele but both failed to influence the game well enough. Moura looked a bit dissinterested but then after scoring at Camp Nou you could understand the adrenalin come down.
It wasn't all bad because we managed to keep the ball for long periods but our Lancashire visitors got in key challenges on a continual basis. Skipp on debut was pleasing but in combination with the workmanlike Sissoko wasn't going to win the game with a key pass. In the end a 'shit or bust' long ball in the direction of Lorrente did the trick with Kane laying off for Eriksen to reprise his Inter finish with the left foot. Very pleased to see us avoid doing the Spursy thing against a Burnley side doing a great Stoke timewasting imitation. Makes a pleasant change to actually sit through Sunday knowing it is us with the points already in the bank with Chelsea and Arsenal still to play

I forget Lloris (5)
which was understandable
in the circumstances.
One good punch
1 bad ball out.
nothing much to do otherwise

Coming round to the new Dele.
Dropping in
dropping off
not dropping out
seeing what needs to be done
filling the gaps.
less flash
but more team orientated.

Burnley were anti-football
but nearly got away with it.

Once again Sissoko shows his value in this game, some great interceptions when they had the odd break and some really powerful runs from deep from a rather static team in front of him which had a lot of the players wanting ball into feet constantly. The great thing about this mans resilience is that he is a bit of a machine and hardly ever injured. For me i'm happy to see this guy stay and be part of the squad for the next few years. Adds discipline, power and pace into the CM options as well as versatility, would probably be a better RB than Trippier if i'm honest who literally gets the ball, never beats his opposite number and seems to cross 75% of his balls into there legs, whilst spending most of the game pointing at imaginary things and telling others how to be better. Yawn.

His crossing was actually largely great. A few balls on plates that no one moved for. Better crosses than his compatriot on the right flank today. He did well today IMO. The hate for him on this thread is very much off base.
Sissoko is playing well...

This was a tough game, and they set ojt to make it frustrating and dull. It almost worked, too, and a point at Spurs would've been a pretty big result for Burnley.

This is where the quality of the squad really shows. Kane worked hard and effectively, and he made the winner. Eriksen is class and was brought on to have that kind of impact. I'd give MOM to Kane, though.

Great to see a youngster get a game and he generally did well. Give him a few games and he'll get much better in terms of positioning and reading the game, but i wonder if that's too much of a risk most weeks. Sissoko is a machine, and he's a very good partner for a youngster. He played well again.
Davies didn't have loads to do, but he provided adequate cover in the absence of preferred options. Good for him.

Let's see if Arsenal and Chelsea can keep up, and if Pool can stay ahead of us for once.

I feel like a lot of you are criticising the performance but basing it not on the football we played, but the length of time it took to break through. Individually nobody excelled, but collectively the players had several chance, in both halves, to score and only wastefulness spared Burnley. Kane should’ve had a penalty, Lucas had a great chance, Lamela wasted two lovely openings, Son missed when it would’ve been easier to score and Dele mistimed at the back post with an empty net. We also had an enourmous level of possession, played almost exclusively in Burnley’s half, conceded no shots on target and, many greatest source of pride, kept going until the death. Old Spurs draws or even loses through a smash and grab. Credit to the manager.

Against Barcelona we had nothing to lose so went all out, today we were on a hiding to nothing. Win and it’s what’s expected, draw or lose and we’re ‘Spursy’, and all with a pathetic atmosphere against a side who are playing for a point. Much to be pleased about.

Lloris had almost nothing to do. One horrible pass out when he should’ve hoofed it under pressure aside, he was fine.

Trippier was noteable for how little I noticed him. Not tested defensively, no crosses of particular quality to comment ok. Some decent link up down the right with Sissoko.

Alderweireld was fine, odd decent long pass, a few good headers when needed, not overly tested.

Davies ditto. Solid enough, clearly targeted by the Burnley long ball but handled a rough customer in Ashley Barnes well.

Rose pissed me off throughout. Since when, Danny, can you cut in on your right and score a screamer? Constant poor crossing and bad decisions.

Skipp did well. He had to grow into it, and dribbled into trouble once or twice, but after one great thumping tackle he was more involved, played some good quick passes into feet, started playing passes into the channels and began breaking into the attacking areas off the ball. Promising,

Sissoko has a decent game, he tracked back very well the one time Burnley posed a threat, and was our main thrust forward with his link up with Trippier on the right.

Lamela played too good lifted passes early on but that aside he was frustrating. Wasted two good chances, one of which was from our best move of the match, was constantly caught on the ball and was masterful at failing to do the obvious. No composure at all in this match,

Dele never found any space to play on his terms and therefore struggled to adapt. Tried to roam but anything positive he tried tended to fail, until the death when he was composed in the box to keep our attack alive.

Lucas had one great chance, and huffed away trying to make something happen, but really wasn’t at the races with generally poor touches and lack of cohesion with his colleagues.

Kane had no space in the box so went elsewhere looking for the ball. One great pass to Sissoko aside (Lamela miss) he was fairly ineffective, but showed awareness and composure to make the winner,

Eriksen can on and immediately injected more purpose into our passing, added some variation to our attack and of course ghosted in like a prime John White to score a lovely winner.

Son gave a masterclass in miscontrol and profligacy. Poor show compounded by an embarrassing miss.

Llorente in little time use his not so subtle gifts to create too good opportunities, one of which resulted in our goal. There is a use to him.

So far, friend, so far
We've played well here and there,
mainly there
and my research reveals
we're only on game 17.
Don't move the goalposts.

Huh, what goalposts are we moving?

Performance isn't important if you're picking up wins. How many games do you consider we've played 'well' in so far:

Chelsea
Leicester
Fulham (at a push)

Disagree is a NEUTRAL RATING, I disagree with the people who say Trippier had a bad game, he was noticeably better than Danny Rose IMO yesterday. Dry your eyes tbfh.

Stick me on ignore sure, do yourself a favour.

Sorry been away.
Anyway to answer your question.
Not many whole games
though we have played well at times.

Playing poorly is not a winning strategy
or likely to enthuse fans.
No team plays badly by design
but sometimes you can be thwarted
by the opposition tactics
or lady luck.
Bus parkers and Burnley come to mind.
even though you play quite well.

My contention is that over a lengthy period
38 games will suffice
you will win some games playing badly
and lose some games playing well
But in the long term
and 17 games is not enough in my view
(which is where you have moved the goalposts
or cut them down to 4ft)
you win more game playing well than playing badly.

Sometimes good teams playing well
lose.
Sometimes poor teams win.
The better the players
and the manager and his tactics
the more likely you are to win.
Man Utd have some very good players
but they are not always selected (Pogba)
and Mourinho depresses everyone's performance
and they lose.

Playing well is always the key
to doing well over the long term
though short term you can get away with it
if as you say you are winning.
But the fans,
Tottenham fans anyway
won't go along with it for long

Playing well and poorly need defining
short and long term need defining.

Cheers

What about the old chestnut
would I rather we played well and lost
or played poorly and won.

See my previous answers
I always want Spurs to play well
whatever the outcome
which is not in my hands.
