Danny Simpson saying on a podcast that during Leicesters title season he should have been sent off by Mark Clattenburg and that Mark Clattenburg said “i shoulda sent you off there but i didn’t because i want you’s to win it”

if anyone was ever in doubt i guess it puts it to bed.

Honestly he should be charged for something like that (Clattenburg)

I always hate reflecting on that season, end up having angry spells thinking about Danny Williams pass back, all those 1-0s and Pulis saying he wants them to win it

Danny Simpson claimed that referee Mark Clattenburg told the player he didn't send a Leicester City player off, because he wanted them to win the league.

These days, Leicester aren't even capable of beating Championship side Blackburn Rovers, never mind mount a challenge for the Premier League title.

Of course, when they did manage it in 2015/16 no one could have seen it coming, seeing as they started the campaign as a 5000/1 chance of winning it.

They were far more likely to have been relegated that season, having only just survived the drop the previous campaign, not that you need reminding of all of this.

What you might know is that the referees were on Leicester's side, or at least one of them, at least according to Simpson, who was right back for Claudio Ranieri's side.

The former Manchester United player claimed that during a game, one that he couldn't remember exactly, Clattenburg refused to send a player off.
Simpson, who also claimed Cristiano Ronaldo once ruined his date, said the Leicester player had been booked and probably deserved a second booking, but the ref told him he wanted Ranieri's team to win the league so didn't produce a second booking.

"I remember Clattenburg, mate. Wow," the former full back regaled the story on Under the Cosh.

"I think he should have sent someone away.
"He said something like, ‘I should have sent you there, but I want you to win.’
"Dude, that was crazy. That was crazy, you know, I swear to god.

"Good job there is no VAR but yes."

"I had to pretend I didn’t hear it. I burst out laughing and thought, ‘Yeah, we’re going to do this.

"I think it was Drinky [Danny Drinkwater], strictly speaking.

“It was his second yellow or something and he could easily have sent it off but he didn’t.”

Appears to be total bollocks. Clattenburg didn't book Drinkwater that season and only showed one yellow card in the 2 games he reffed post-xmas (Huth).

Dangerous thing to come out with by Simpson. He'll probably be ok as he used the words "I think it was...." which means any potential slander lawsuit brought by Clattenburg will be weak but even so, very stupid.

Whether or not it’s true, Clattenburg can’t leave it out there. His lawyers will surely push for sort of retraction by Simpson.

That offside decision today was an absolute disgrace. The lines are deliberately not drawn in same location on the arm for both players.

It's funny but officiating like this really grinds my gears. He obviously didn't mean to flick the card and a gesture like that has to not be considered beyond the pale.

Not wanting to bang on about refs but holy shit, this happened in an important game at a semi professional level (Isthmian league Premier).

Truly awful decision. Still think it’s only as bad the decision to rule Vertonghen offside vs Sunderland 7(?) years ago when he was 5 yards inside his own half. And that was in the EPL! Frightening…

Would go a long way to humanising the refs and would help us understand their decisions.

With Michael Oliver being a Newcastle supporter his ability to ref some of the biggest PL matches diminishes quickly going into next season. Good news for those 2nd tier guys.

Shouldn’t really be reffing in the league full stop. How can his decisions in any game be viewed without that lens of bias now. Sending someone off to harm rivals chances or help Newcastle’s chances. etc etc.

I’ve always thought that he was pretty awful anyway.

Surely it's better for refs to be open about the club they support vs trying to hide it.

That's why I made the point about him doing fewer big matches if Newcastle is in the title race.
