Does anyone know the reason why we abandoned having a reserve team?

Wouldn't it be beneficial in times like these that instead of having players out on loan, have them in a reserve team so we can promote them to 1st team when we're struggling with injuries?

I know the players benefit more from playing competitive football rather than "practice matches" but I just think it would help the club more to have them on hand ready to use.

Also with the likes of Falque not getting any games for Southampton, surely he'd be better off getting some games regularly rather than none.

And surely shifting these young players to several different clubs makes them feel a little unwanted at Tottenham? Playing a reserve team would be better for player/club unity?

Or maybe I'm taking complete rubbish :)

We also used to have about 15 career reserve team players. Now Villa and West Ham pay Jenas and Bentley's wages instead.

With the 25 man squad rule, the case for having reserve teams is even less.

Reserve team football is simply too uncompetitive, and the scheduling can be ridiculous. Due to bad weather, cup games, clashes with first team games and the like, you can go three months without a game and then have 6 in three weeks just when the first team would be looking to use fresh players from the reserves.

Pros and cons.
PLayers like Walker, Livermore and, seemingly, caulker and Naughton, benefit from getting genuine competitive experience, especially in the EPL, without us, directly, suffering form any feck-ups they make while learning their trade.

On the other hand, we don't have these players available for selection when our squad is exposed due to injuries (THudd/Dawson/Kaboul), or loonacy feck-ups (RatKnip sending Bassong, Pienaar and Corluka out on loan).

The happy medium which seems to be mooted occasionally, is in having a genuinely genuine (sorry, words fail me), competitive reserve league - but no-matter what they do with it, it always seems to be a bag-of-sheeee-ite.
