"the fact that the majority of the football-watching public will merely shrug their shoulders in indifference at this news or say 'Good' proves the lack of understanding of the modern referee."

No, what is worrying is that refs like stlyes lack an understanding of the game. We have had some bad refs but I don't think I have seen a worse official than Styles in this country.

The lack of understanding of the referee - of the game? or from the fans? I read it is as they don't understand the game.

Graham Poll was the best ref in the game.

One very big cock up ruined his rep.

There should be some sort of triumphant music upon entering this thread. Quite disappointed there wasn't. Otherwise, thrilled.

I think it's chelski who'll suffer most out of this.
He'll be able to pave Abramovich's drive way with no conflict of interest now.
And as for the man himself/ He can f hash star k off.

Howard Webb is the best official in the English game at the moment. He’s made a couple of mistakes but everyone has in their careers. He controls the big games well, and he doesn’t dish out cards like it’s Christmas when he’s under pressure. He also seems to have the respect of players that is half the battle for a referee.

The problem for referees is that the game is so quick, and there’s so many cheats. In cricket, it is almost impossible to see some edges, but you can appeal and get a technological review, as that suits the speed of cricket, that wouldn’t work in football. If we referred to TVs whether something was a foul or not, the ref would have to stop the game and then if it wasn’t he’d have to play a drop ball or something, when the team may have been on the counter attack.

There’s always going to be mistakes in football, and they do seem to even out over a season, there’s no conspiracy against certain teams, even if it feels like it sometimes. In probability, if you flip a coin over and over again, the probability of getting heads 5 times in a row is 1 in 32 (5^2), so although unlikely, it happens. If you replace getting heads with 50/50 decisions against us, then 5 in a row seems like a lot, but it’s going to happen.

We, as fans, need to learn to accept the little mistakes, but at the same time, the FA needs to take responsibility and demote referees if they make a huge mistake. But then the problem is filling their place, there’s just not enough top quality referees in England, probably in the world.

Saying that, Rob Styles wasn't fit to ref the Championship, always wanted to be centre stage, and didn't even seem bothered if he got things wrong, as long as he got publicity.
