Optimistic I know but maybe this means Goretzka might be coming. Strange we've dropped our interest in Barkley all of a sudden.

Lots of Spurs-focused journalists tweeted at the same time that we could’ve matched Chelsea’s bid but Pochettino prefers other targets - which means this is something they’ve all been told by the club.

The Spurs PR department in overdrive.

The Spurs journos suggesting that Poch have other targets.

Just don't see what the downside would be. The minute he signs the contract, he's worth 30 million. With Pochettino coaching him, he would at least become a squad option that would be better than the likes of Nkoudou or Sissoko. And when we could flog Wimmer for 15 million, I reckon we could get a decent fee for Barkley as well if we had to get rid of him down the line.

I hope Herc is right, but Spurs 'tying' something up for the summer means nothing to me. Could easily get gazumped. Plus we need reinforcements now and £15m is a no brainer. We can't stand still and hope to outperform others again.

I just read the news and thought exactly the same. It would be interesting to know what changed from the summer to now?

agreed, a zillion things could happen between now and the summer and any supposed verbal deal isnt worth shit really, its hardly legally binding, look at what we did to RB, looks like we told him to wait then didnt bother

lol at people believing journos when it suits them but when they are going against the world is ending narrative it's just the "PR team in overdrive".

If journos were tweeting "poch is suicidal over missing out on Barkley" you can bet everyone would be going about that as proof of levys ****y ways

Do people really think Levy would jepodise everything: poch, the new stadium, sponsors because he didn't want to spend 15mill, they've clearly together come to a decision it's not worth the risk. Levy wouldn't disregard it if poch still wanted him, we've had itk saying as much many times. He may be tight but he's not stupid

A big shame to miss out on him given his dribbling ability is something we're clearly missing and that he was holding out for us to sign him.

I've become disillusioned with our transfer business these past 18months / 2 years, Sanchez excepted.

You got some statistical evidence to back that up?

Whilst i agree, @Hercules said two days ago that RB was Pochs number one target and wanted him, and now its over.

January is not a great time to buy, but we need some options, otherwise 5/6th beckons, and whilst i am not too bothered by that, others, namely some of our players might be. Not saying signings for signings sake, but some actual quality, and if it can't get it over the line then fine, but hearing "we have someone lined up for the summer" and we don't get CL tied up, we then hear "Was depended on CL" and then the merry go round starts again.

I am a staunch supporter of Levy, but in the last couple of seasions we have not added the quality we need, and he needs to pull his finger out, because unfortunately for us, as we are not City or United the line for success/failure is very thin.

Barkley would’ve really strengthened us. If nothing else it would’ve meant that Sissoko wouldn’t of played again this season and then could’ve binned him off in the summer

There are suggestions all over twitter that Barkley wanted to be one of the top earners at the club which was naturally never going to work. I dont know how true that is mind you but we know he was offered over 100k a week by Everton to stay so it does seem like he would expect at least that from us.

It's also been suggested that we would have paid the 15m that Chelsea will likely cough up but Poch has other targets in mind, one that was mentioned was Andre Gomes at Barca who we know we were looking at in the summer.

I think Barkley would have been good hear and whilst a lot of this might be PR from the club, I'm gonna choose to believe it as it makes me feel better.

Last night's result has annoyed me more than any other this season and then this Barkley news was an extra kick in the balls so the talk this morning, PR or not, has definitely helped.

We'd still be lumbered with Sissoko until Barkley is fit enough to play. It's been said that RB is 6 weeks from being fully recovered, but we don't know if that's 100% accurate, so he might not play until early March, for instance. That would mean a lot of Sissoko, even if we had signed RB.

Barkley with 1 leg is a better option than Sissoko.

Chelsea obviously don’t share our concerns over his injury.

I'd be embarrassed if I was a Chelsea fan (in general and because of this). He outright rejected them last window, now he hasn't got other options he's happy to settle for them.

Is RB really that good? Loads of noise as an up & coming youngster a few years ago; been playing regularly but nothing to shine like Dele last season; so why is everyone so upset about not signing him?

I think he's overrated cos he's English.

It’s all opinions but I’ve always liked him. Strong, good pace over 15m, good mentality, can score, can assist, has an eye for a pass, can cover the Dembele role as well as any of Son’s, Eriksens or Alli’s, is English with a wealth of experience of prem football and would’ve cost us fuck all and within our wage structure. What’s not to like.

Oh and Poch really wanted him a few months ago but now he doesn’t, apparently.

I never get this "january isn't the best time to buy" line. Deals are negotiated all year round. They can just be completed in the transfer window. Summer or winter. In regards to when a deal can be completed there is no difference.
