I've just been speaking to a Middlesborough fan and he believes that we have a future England international on our hands.

Aparts from the commercial side of things, I don't understand the purchase of Yedlin when we have a player who's already better than him on our books.

I have a feeling that he'll be fighting and winning the fight for the right back birth.
Looked good every time I watched him.

Yedlin has something nobody can teach though, and that is 1/1,000,000 pace+acceleration. In some situations there's no way for an opposition player to even defend it. If he can be nurtured into a clever and more technical player (he's already shown much improvement from when he burst on the scene in Seattle to now) then he has an unbelievable ceiling.

I think next season Yedlin will be loaned out to a lower Prem/higher Championship team to get his playing time, and then in that time Fredericks will challenge Walker.

Pace I don't think is the be all and end all, I would rather have football intelligence rather than pace.

I would rather have a full back who's positionally aware than some one who get get himself out of trouble due to being quick, at a higher level defensive pace isn't critical, look at the two best full backs in the country, Zabeletta and Ivanovic, they are not speed demons, just cultured players who know their positional well.

I know, and I said as much. Of course pace isn't the end all be all. Corluka was one of the best defensive fullbacks we've had in recent years.

But can you imagine how good Zabaleta would be with Yedlin's pace? That's the point I'm making. You can [try to] teach Yedlin to play the way Zabaleta/Ivanovic do. You can't teach Zabaleta/Ivanovic to run like Yedlin can.

Naughton had footballing intelligence however lacked pace...unfortunately pace in today's game is ccrucial...by the way, all the best players in world football have pace.

I would say if Zabaleta or Ivanovic had pace, they wouldn't be the players they are today. They would be technically poorer.

I was just saying that pace isn't the be all and end all. I personally don't think it's a massive advantage in the full back role. What you seem to get with quick full backs is an inconsistency of delivery whether that's a pass or a cross as well as a lack of concentration.

Even Ashely Cole, one of Engand's best fullbacks is technically was inferior to Stuart Pearce and despite his lack of pace scored more goals and assists for England.

Walker is an athlete first, footballer second you can tell that through out his life he has relied on his pace and you can't teach a player technique at a late stage, it's ingrained from a young age.

The FA a few years ago were trying to look for athletes and make them into players and it just didn't work. I think in some if not all positions your better of being technically sound first and then work on your physical deficiencies.

I suspect in any case that there are few rightbacks in the Premiership quicker than Fredericks.

I've heard (not sure where) that he can play left side too. If so it relieves the problem of his push into the first team

when we have let in goals twice due to the ball bouncing over naughtons head i dont think he ever had the intelligence

I think we're looking more at having wing back types to overlap and get back quick
