Because the extra mile means over paying on a player when he'll be significantly less next year.
Will we be in with such a huge chance of winning the league next year? Next year might just be too late? If the manager really wants him we should be going the extra mile

He looked a rather lonely figure on MOTD yesterday. Scored a couple of great goals but didn't celebrate much and his teammates didn't really congratulate him much either. I'd imagine that if Poch still wanted him, Levy would have been in with a bid by now, regardless of what he thinks of Peace.

Tom Carroll celebrated by himself. OMG - maybe everyone hates him too. ;)

I'm not sure its about an extra mile which implies the road is there and we just need to travel it when in reality that mile has a bridge that has been broken and the guy on the other side won't let you mend it.
Peace said last summer that we offered the £25million but he didn't want staged payments, I am pretty certain that Pochottino understands when something is possible and when its not.
I know some people don't want him for a variety of reasons but I for one am certain that he would be a terrific player for us, and can't for the life of me understand why other people don't, however, I can't see it this window.

Peace knows Newcastle want him too so can play hardball on price to us.
Only way he will come here is we overpay MASSIVELY.
Stay clear!

If SB doesn't want to go to Newcastle if we have concrete interest, their bid is irrelevant if he says no, no matter how much it is. Player power rules the game.

Unless you have Peace as chairman

And unless even going to Newcastle is better than staying at a club where the atmosphere for you is toxic; teammates, manager, supporters...

I think if we are serious about signing him he is ours, without question. We were close last summer. And who in their right mind would choose a bottom 3 club if there is solid interest from a team 3 points off the top?

I think that IF Berahino goes to Newcastle we'll know that our interest cooled, I am sure he won't go if he knows we are still hot for him, if he knows we are not then Newcastle is a good move for him.
We still haven't allocated squad number 18 have we?

Buying him doesn't guarantee us winning the league...and no-one knows what the management's plans are, they could deem him worth if they go after him in the summer for example.

When weighed against Potential CL qualification is that not a fair risk?

Of course but it's a bigger risk if we spunk stupid cash on him (more that what he was worth in the summer) and still not qualify for the CL so...

He was 'allegedly' desperate to come in the summer but look how that turned out. He appears desperate to leave West Brom and I'm sure he would jump at the chance to join any club, even Newcastle.
Money talks over player power when it comes to a stubborn Chairman/Owner, Levy would do exactly the same as Peace in this situation.

As for the fat comments - well that's what Pulis likes to do with all his players; bulk them up.

I thought their entire team looked chubby when we played them earlier in the season.

Why sign him now? The guy looks like he needs a 3 month boot camp to loose all that fat and get fit. He certainly couldn't play the way Poch would want him to. He's clearly let himself go to McDonald's a fair bit.

Doumbia supposedly doing a medical with newcastle so that is likely to rule them out of Berahino.

WBA running out of options now. Still dont think WBA chairman will sell him this window unless they receive a huge offer that he can say was too good to turn down which cant see happening now. If he sells him to us for lower then we offered previously then his ego will take a huge hit and chairmen at that level wont allow that to happen.

Shame for Saido because this season will basically be a write off for him.

media saying Seydou Doumbia going to Newcastle on loan with option to buy from Roma.
if true, means they're no longer in for Berahino and strengthens our bargaining position.

wonder whether we could have gone for Doumbia on loan though; loan him now then Dembele2 arrives in the summer seems pretty ideal...

edit: sidford why you little

Sky Sports say Newcastle want 2 more strikers and a LB before the Deadline- so that still doesn't rule them out completely for Berahino even if they get Doumbia. They also say they're not prepared to meet WBA's asking price.

With the cash they have already spent and the wages and probable loan fee involved with Doumbia i doubt they would be in a position to sign Berahino even at a compromised deal.

Suppose we'll know pretty quickly but would imagine thats them out now
