Firstly, can people drop the whole "if Poch is happy then that's good enough for me" bullshit when it comes to signing controversial players. Stop being such a blind fanboy. People said he was wrong to go after Osvaldo, Sissoko, Berahino and the fan boys leapt to his defence every time but not one of those players have shown any justification of the faith he showed in them. He is a superb manager but has got this kind of call wrong on many occasions in the past - his judgement isn't perfect. Learn to think for yourselves.

From experience, I find that as long as players are delivering on the pitch our fans don't really care what they've done off it. Hoddle said some disgusting things about disabled people. Van Der Vaart beat up his wife. King and Woodgate both got arrested for assaults and allegedly said racist things during them. Defoe was a serial love rat and IIRC ended someone else's marriage. These guys for the most part are loved by our fans. If Aurier came here, got his head down, performed well and stayed out of trouble then nobody would give a shit about what he's done in the past.

Having said that, I have my doubts about leopards changing their spots. Yes, you have examples of some players who have done, but for every Cantona/Van Persie there are a load more Taraabts, Balotellis and Ravel Morrisons who leave behind them a long trail of managers who think they can change them but ultimately fail. Poch has proved ruthless in getting any bad eggs out of the squad the second they step out of line, and this to me seems like an accident waiting to happen. Perhaps he could succeed here but I can't think of many players with "extra baggage" that we've gambled on who have been successes, think Bentley, Sissoko, Dalmat...Adebayor was good at times before he turned back into Adebayor. I guess Gallas was a decent enough signing on a free.

But anyway. Aurier isn't allowed into the country. This isn't speculation - he literally was denied entry when trying to come to London. Surely that makes this a complete non-starter and this entire discussion completely pointless anyway?

If it was 'a complete non starter' we wouldn't be getting ITK from our most accurate source saying it's 'ongoing'. I think it's safe to assume that we've had talks with Aurier and they've gone well and that his attitude is OK. I originally said 'not in a million years' when we were linked, but the signs seem to be that we are very interested. All I can say is that I've never met Aurier, but I bet some representatives of the club have, and they're better placed to make a judgement than I am.

The issue is almost certainly whether he will win his appeal against a prison sentence for assaulting police outside a Paris night club. If he doesn't he won't get a work permit. The appeal was heard on August 7th. The verdict is awaited.

Talent often comes with baggage

That's why we pay Poch the big bucks to deal with it

I'm sure our beloved manager will get the best out of this guy if he signs

So apart from our links and obvious issues with work permits, I know very little about Serge Aurier beyond what's "googleable".

So I did what everyone else in my position has done. "Youtubed" him. And I now know, very little about Serge Aurier beyond what's googleable and youtubable. Other than the fact that he likes a good old sliding tackle. 8mins worth of sliding tackles.

All of which looked pretty impressive, by the way. But I feel no more educated about what he may bring to the table. Apart from an excellent sliding tackle.

Can someone inform me without me having to trawl through 37 pages of text?

[PS. I feel italics is massively underused here.]

I had to go all Danny Rose on this guy and watch a youtube video. It was called "Welcome To Manchester United"! :)

Is he any better than walker??

In my opinion - yes. Aurier has every attribute to succeed in the PL: pace, power, drives forward, reads the game well, strong in the tackle, and is an unbelievable athlete. Exactly the sort of player who will thrive at Wembley.

IMO he's as like for like as KW as we're going to get, and for me probably shades it in terms of natural ability. Poch will make him into a beast, and his CL experience could prove to be invaluable. He knows what it takes to win, and this could be the difference in tight League and CL games.

Wouldn't be surprised if Aurier was Plan A and should it not go through or he not be allowed a work permit Santiago Arias would be Plan B.

Either way I think we'll get a new RB by the time the window shuts.

This guy is quick, strong and powerful and if signed would make our defensive line incredibly strong. Mouthwatering prospect !!

Ye, he would be perfect. If we sign Aurier, we will have two right backs with different skill sets. It would be real nice to have a player like Aurier against pacy wingers like Hazard and Martial.
