article in the star saying Redknapp has looked at him. He is quality but wont want to be a number 2 behind Gomez

We we're liked to Asenjo a lot time ago and I suspect the rumour is just a continuation of that one rather than anything new. I really doubt we'll sign him.

Why would we spend 5m on a backup keeper that wants to be a number one? When we can invest the money in other areas of the squad. Gomes doesn't need to be kept on his toes he's done alright since Cudicini has been injured. Unless you're telling me that having Alnwick as backup has helped focus him.

I'd tend to agree with that.

Look at what our better competitors have:

Man Utd - Kuszczak (£2.1m)
Chelsea - Hilário (free)
Arsenal - Fabianski (undisclosed)
Liverpool - Cavalieri (£3m)
Aston Villa - Guzan (£600,000)
Man City - Nielsen (undisclosed)

None of those were anywhere near the £5m mark, and most are clearly not good enough to take the number 1 shirt off of their respective first choice goalies. They've been signed, for the most part, to act as decent cover if and when they are needed.

Joe Lewis has been mentioned, but I have my doubts that he'd be anything other than Alnwick Mk II. Anyone remember Alnwick coming to the Lane with Sunderland and drawing lots of praise for his performance in our 3-2 win?

All but 2 of the keepers listed above were signed from abroad, and all but 1 are those listed are what I'd consider to be a young keeper. While Asenjo fits the bill in this respect, I feel he's just too expensive and too high profile for what we need.

the artical:

FA CUP semi-finalists Tottenham have been told it will cost £5m to land Atletico Madrid keeper Sergio Asenjo.

Manager Harry Redknapp wants the 19-year-old to act as back up to Heurelho Gomes next season.

Atletico paid Valladolid £4.5m for his services last summer, but he’s struggled for form and has been replaced by Manchester United target David de Gea.

The Spurs boss is still convinced the teenager has the ability to be a top-class stopper, but may find it difficult to persuade Asenjo to move as a reserve keeper.

Meanwhile, Spurs have no recognised right-back and only one fit central defender for Sunday’s semi-final, but striker Peter Crouch feels they have enough strength in depth.

The England ace said: “You look around our squad and we have enough ability to cope with injuries.”

I'd rather we pushed ahead with a deal for Kasper Schmeichel, which woul see him loaned back for a year to County.

If we did sign Asenjo, which I doubt we will, he would either be unhappy at being benched and pine for a move back to Spain, or he would unjustly be pushed in front of Gomes despite not being as good as him. Lose, lose situation for us there.

I don't get why we didn't go for Joe Lewis when Fry tried to sell him us, though I do gnerally fel that foreign keepers have a greater air of calm around them, so it's not a surprise to me that the top clubs have relatively cheap backups from abroad.

We wouldn't have a problem if we' just had the sense to keep Fulop.

Asenjo has had a really bad season in Spain and has lost the fight to De Gea (an 18 year-old-kid who is similar to Van der Sar in style) to keep goal for Atletico Madrid. He has been ridiculed by his own fans game after game, he was fantastic at Valladolid but hasn't made the grade to a bigger team.

Now where have I seen that before?

I'm not going to go comparing the kid to my Gomes when I've never even seen the former play, but if I've come to learn anything about football fans, it's to not trust their opinions of goalkeepers.
