What do you get for winning the FA Cup? £1.8m + a place in the Europa League.

What do you get for winning the Europa League? £4.1m + a place in the Champions League.

Certainly CL qualification makes the europa potentially more attractive for a team like us next year.
But remember it is the TV pool that provides much of the CL prize, and is it certain that a 5th CL team would even be part of the sky coverage? I dunno.

This season, financially, £4.1m does not seem much of a reward after a whole extra set of league fixtures, compared to £1.8m for 6 games in the cup. You can manage those 6 without having to overly strengthen the squad plus have a better run at finishing top 4.

We have had a good team these last few years - one of our best for a generation and yet we have had no reward for it.
Too much effort has been expended on the europa, when that competition has been poisoned with the financially doped CL drop-outs who parachute in when the medals are close at hand.

We should have put that effort into winning the FA cup a few times instead, is all I'm suggesting.

Winning the Europa league is a big deal, its another trophy and a European one at that. Yes winning the CL is much better but just competing in the group stages is nothing more than a money spinner. In 10 or 20 years time mere qualification for the CL will be forgotten but winning the Europa League won't be.

Winning trophies is our raison d'être.

As we won't be competing in either until next season, that's when I'm thinking about ;)

The prize money and TV money for each round is much higher for Europa League than FA Cup. The figures I've quoted are just the prize money for winning the final. Let's also not forget the international exposure and prestige, which we need to attract top players (and managers). If this were a Wigan forum, there would be no debate about which trophy they'd rather win. A lot of their players probably value the mere chance to compete in the Europa league as much as their trophy.

If you were to do it again at the end of the season and it was confirmed that Sherwood was staying, the results between the BSoDL and BSoM would be reversed!
