Should we lease Wembley?

FYI

Stadium event days are regulated, but not fixed to an absolute maximum. At present there are around 11 or so internationals plus other music and ad hoc events at the stadium, but considering there are 19 home games a season (plus cup games), my personal opinion is this could be accomodated (in 2008/09 there were nearly 50 major events at the stadium).

Although it doesnt take away from the argument that there is very little point in us using Wembley, if the argument is presented to the FA, they would definitely sit and listen.

We didn't sell out White Hart Lane last season, so why would we want to not sell out a bigger venue that in return would see us having to hand over some of our gate receipts

Stadiums rarely ever fully sell out for all manner of reasons it does not mean we could not have a bigger average gate at a venue that would allow it.

Chinaman has a good point.

Thought new WHL is still on target for 2014 or 2015 opening - i.e. 2-3 years only.

We've just submitted planning changes, that will probably take another 6 months to sort out, then assuming we get the go ahead we have CPOs which would be a realistic maximum of 9 months. Phase 1 of the build is the supermarket and offices to the north of the site which are scheduled to take around a year, then we can finally get on with building the stadium. We will be lucky if the stadium has been started by 2014/15, and that's all assuming we can get the financing in place. I predict we'll make it into the new stadium by the end of this decade, but only just.

I have been in every tier of both sides of Wembely for various sporting events. It is by far, undisputedly the WORST stadium I have ever been to. Terrible views, no atmosphere... just horrible.

In fact I just watched Henry's supposedly greatest goal on bbc sport website and the old library is positively bouncing compared to their new shite... no surprise they have become so bad now.

it is absolutely imperitive that we stay at WHL and build a proper super packed German style stadium. We cannot be taking risks with a stadium as bad as Wembley.

Now I know some will disagree but fans and atmosphere play a bigger role on the game thatn people realise. (look at campbell in a scum shirt while playing at WHL; the effect is unbelievable).

Do the changes include increased capacity ?

Hope so.

No, just changes to the residential areas and the offices above the supermarket, but as the supermarket and offices are phase 1 then nothing can start until the changes are approved. If the capacity is increased, I believe it can only be within the confines of the currently proposed stadium structure, ie they would have to change the layout to squeeze more seats in.

Completely agree, redeveloping WHL a stand at a time has always been my favoured approach, I believe it would be cheaper and ensure we retain our atmosphere, but it doesn't have the same commercial opportunities as a new stadium, which is what DL is concerned about. As it looks like we're going down the new stadium route I think the single tier in the North stand is vital in making sure it's not just another soulless bowl.

Good post Kabir, only problem is will we be able to keep this team together with our finances. One can hope with our shrewd chairman at the helm.

Uhm, yes, because we already have this team with our current finances.

For CL matches yeah go for it. The scum flopped spectacularly with their attempt but I believe we'd sell out near capacity.

As if.

Maybe for a Milan or a Real. But we didn't sell out a reduced-capacity WHL last season for Twente on a cold Wednesday night
