nice post.
the way i see it is a pre and post levy era.
pre levy characterised by inconsistent transfer policies if any.
post levy involves working to a blueprint with champion s league status as the holy grail.
club history reveals 4 stages to the blueprint.
1. stabilise the sinking ship.
minimal investments were made on the playing staff. transfer inputs limited to nearly past it veterans with a sprinkling of youth, all sufficient to maintain league status. all available resources were employed to stabilise the financial viability of the club.
2.challenge for honours.
once the ship was put financially in order, the club had to satisfy growing expectations and push for european football. enter arnesen and co and the influx of primarily young above average players with a sprinkling of experience. 2 uefa cup appearances resulted.
3.consolidation of status.
push for the acquisition of players with world class potential ripe for development . ramos is given carte blanche start the process with the acquisition of modric, bostock and attempts to secure other potential world beaters like dcs santos, capel etc.
4. the holy grail.
some potentials are realised. spurs manage to turn two or three youngsters into recognised world class players, attract and be financially in a position to make a play for additional established stars and are in a position to offer the fans a brand new top class stadium.
obviously there were and will be hiccups along the way but as we say audere est facere. it may not happen tomorrow, some players will disappoint, heads may drop or be chopped, fans will vent their anger, sorrow or delight but the blueprint is there and that blueprint does not lie.
