15:16 GOAL - Southampton 0-1 Tottenham - Bale
Back at his old club for the first time since leaving in 2007, Gareth Bale bullets a downward header past Artur Boruc from Tom Huddlestone's cross. That is Tottenham's first goal away to Southampton since 1999.
1543: GOAL - Southampton 0-2 Tottenham - Dempsey
Southampton step off Gareth Bale as he canters down the right and their former player slips in Jermain Defoe. Jose Fonte looks as if he can clear the England striker's shot as it trickles towards goal but the defender trips and slips, never making any real connection, and Clint Dempsey bundles in.
Substitution Tom Huddlestone leaves the field to be replaced by Jake Livermore.
Booking Raniere Sandro is shown a yellow card.
16:22 GOAL- Southampton 1-2 Tottenham (Rodriguez)
Moments after Maya Yoshida has somehow managed to miss from one yard, Southampton have given themselves a sliver of hope. Jose Fonte's flicks a corner towards goal and Brad Friedel is down sharply to claw it out. Jay Rodriguez is perfectly placed to put away the rebound and does so, a little nervously.
16:25 CLOSE! Southampton are suddenly sniffing an improbable point. Jay Rodriguez fires just wide from the edge of the box and Brad Friedel was scrambling across nervously. The American did not know which side of the post that one was heading.
Booking Jan Vertonghen receives a caution.
1650: Tottenham bring on Michael Dawson in place of Clint Dempsey to try and shore up their side for the final few minutes. The visitors have held Southampton at arm's length for most of the past 10 minutes with Saints rarely breaking into the box.

Southampton will be looking to move out of the bottom three on Sunday, while Tottenham Hotspur are aiming at the top four.

Southampton are once again expected to be without the services of record signing Gaston Ramirez.

Nigel Adkins revealed ahead of last weekend's match at West Ham United that the Uruguayan is likely to be missing for another month.

Jack Cork and Tadanari Lee are making steady progress in their recovery from knee and wrist injuries respectively, while Frazer Richardson will have his thigh strain assessed ahead of the game.

Having made his debut at Upton Park, Poland international Artur Boruc will hope to retain his standing between the sticks.

Tottenham's Gareth Bale will return from paternity leave to face his former employers.

The Wales international missed the games with Chelsea and Maribor after the birth of his first child and will be joined in the squad by Brad Friedel, who also did not travel to Slovenia on Thursday.

Emmanuel Adebayor could return after back pain and be joined at St Mary's by Mousa Dembele, who has recently struggled with a hip complaint.

Michael Dawson (illness) will be assessed ahead of kick-off, while Scott Parker (Achilles), Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Younes Kaboul (both knee) are all sidelined.

It has been an uncomfortable return to the top flight for the Saints so far, with one win and four points all they have to show for maximum effort in eight games.

Scoring goals has not been a problem for Nigel Adkins' side, but keeping them out at the other end has been an issue.

The fixture has not been kind to the Saints, with three of the top four already faced and a trip to high-flying West Bromwich Albion next on the schedule, but results need to improve if confidence is to be restored and pressure lifted.

Spurs, on the other hand, have been in decent form of late, with a derby defeat to Chelsea last time out bringing to an end a run of four straight successes.

Andre Villas-Boas now has his troops sat just outside the UEFA Champions League places, with it possible that they could join the frontrunners if results go their way this weekend.

They will be keen to get the Chelsea result out of their system on Sunday and will hope that a midweek trip to Slovenia in the UEFA Europa League has not taken too much out of them. Southampton are once again expected to be without the services of record signing Gaston Ramirez.

Southampton will again be without record signing Gaston Ramirez due to a thigh injury.

Tadanari Lee has recovered from an elbow injury, while teenage defender Luke Shaw may make his league debut.

Tottenham's Gareth Bale will return against his previous club, having missed two matches following the birth of his first child.

Emmanuel Adebayor has overcome a back problem, while Mousa Dembele (hip) and Michael Dawson (illness) hope to play.

The excitement of successive promotions and a return to the Premier League has rapidly disappeared for Southampton. Their dream has become a nightmare.

Last weekend's latest capitulation at fellow newcomers West Ham was another hefty upper-cut to the jaw, conceding four at Upton Park probably more unacceptable than the six they let-in at Arsenal in September. Three different goalkeepers have been used but they're all suffering with bad backs from picking the ball out of the net far too often.

Inevitably the pressure is mounting on manager Nigel Adkins. He admits he's unsure how long he's got left but after what he's achieved in two remarkable years surely he has earned the right to see this through?

The owners remain quiet and maybe the last thing he needs is the dreaded vote of confidence. Instead, he should be heartened by a poll in this week's local paper in which 78% of the supporters offered their backing.

St Mary's Stadium has been a horror venue for Tottenham. Five visits there have brought five defeats and no goals. However another blank would seem most unlikely as Spurs have scored in every game this season and hit a combined six goals in their recent away wins at Manchester United and Reading.

There may be some heavy legs following Thursday's Europa League tie against Maribor in Slovenia but manager Andre Villas-Boas will be able to freshen up his starting XI. Friedel, Gallas and Dempsey should all be back, but it's the return of Gareth Bale that is most intriguing. His career began in Southampton stripes as a slight 16-year-old and, after his brilliant season was put on hold last Saturday as he became a father for the first time, he'll be keen to be back with a bang and prove he's the "daddy" in more ways than one.

Head-to-head
  • This is their first meeting since March 2005 when Southampton, then managed by Harry Redknapp, won 1-0 at St Mary's courtesy of a goal from Nigel Quashie.
  • Tottenham have lost all five visits to the St Mary's Stadium, failing to score a goal. All four league games ended 1-0 to the hosts, who also enjoyed a 4-0 win in the FA Cup in 2003.
  • The last time Tottenham scored away at Southampton was in 1999, when Oyvind Leonhardsen's goal secured a 1-0 win.

    Southampton
  • The 24 goals conceded by Southampton after eight games is a Premier League record. The last top-flight team to concede as many at this stage was Wolves in 1963.
  • Southampton have had 50 shots on target against them this season, more than any other team in the top flight.
  • The Saints are the only top-flight side to have been behind at some point in all eight of their league games this season.
  • They have four points from their first eight games - one less than at the same stage of the 2004-05 season in which they were relegated.

    Tottenham
  • Defeat by Chelsea last weekend was their first loss in nine matches in all competitions since losing on the first day of the season against Newcastle.
  • Only five goals have been scored in the first half of Tottenham's eight league matches this season, but 22 goals have been scored after half time.
  • Spurs have scored an unrivalled five league goals in the 15 minutes straight after half-time this season.
  • Tottenham and their north London rivals Arsenal have allowed their opponents the least number of shots (81) in the top flight this season.
  • Gareth Bale made his professional debut for Southampton at the age of 16 years and 275 days in a Championship game against Millwall in April 2006. He played 45 times for the Saints, scoring five goals, before moving to Spurs in May 2007.

After the euphoria of them being in the EPL, this is the perfect time to spank this type of team.

3-1

I hope Mousa is fit for fight and that Bale really is going to play. I can easily see us dropping points in this game. Not because Southampton is a great team, but because we have are having a hard time breaking down defensive teams at the moment.

I can' imagine Southampton trying to bring the game to us. If they do, we'll win. If not, I think we'll drop points.

I also think we'll win but by a closer margin, maybe 0-2 or 1-2.

Our form has been decent but our performances haven't.

Played quite well against Villa for decent periods but yeah I agree, we have looked better on the road though. Goals in this though, and they're woeful at the back.

Does AVB use the 2-4 Chelsea spanking to ease Friedel out?

I really don't see goals in us at the moment.. Having said that we have looked much better away from home in the prem. So I will go for a 1-3 win, or maybe 2-3..

Sad to say I don't see us getting much from this game a draw at best.

We have an awful record @ Southampton.

2-0

I think we will be fine. I'm actually going for a 3-0 win. Feel confident. Would love to see this lineup

Lloris

Walker Caulker Vertonghen Naughton

Sandro Dembele

Lennon Siggy Bale

Ade

Be a good game for Siggy to play as will definitely get chances, Ade needs to start really so we can see if he is up for the challenge of completion, Lloris has to be nailed on and really want to se Caulker and Verty together. Make it so Andre!

You got some statistical evidence to back that up?

Last time they were in the Prem i went and we lost 2-1, but i didn't realise our records was so bad down there? Anyway, back then they were a staple premier league struggler when now they are just coming up so the dynamics should be different, so dont hold the record with much bother.

Hoping for a win, and also a start for at least Loris, and hopefully Ade, The Friedel stance is just getting boring now. Defoe probably wouldnt be a bad option in this match as i dont think they will park the bus, that is when we really need someone like Ade.

Didn't like St Mary's much, looks like the cookie cutter stadiums they have built over the years, like Bolton and Derby, both are the same.

I think it is time that AVB started playing his 4-3-3 and get the likes of the wingers up along side Defoe, and push Dembele and Sig further forward. 4-2-3-1 is leaving Defoe too isolated up front as he just can't hold the ball up well enough.
