I disagree with the point made that we are luck to have a player of Bales quality. It was sound scouting and development throughout a number of years that were now enjoying the fruits of our labour.

I don't suppose the wishes of the player in question have any bearing on things do they? If Bale is happy to stay here, even if earning a massive wage for the rest of his career, DL will find a way to do it and happily so. However, unlike many fans, DL actually deals and lives in reality. He'll make the best of a bad situation when they day comes that Bale basically says, "no matter what you do, I'm gorn."

Sensational.

There's only one player on the planet that I would want my club to turn down £120m for, and that's Messi. Bale is great, but he's a long way away from Messi, and if we actually got that offer, we'd be crazy not to take it. teams like Porto and especially Atletico (Torres > Forlan > Aguero > Falcao) have made a habit of selling their best players for big money and replacing them, so it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that we could replace Bale. maybe not like-for-like or necessarily ready-made, but in the right hands £120m could EASILY be used to make a better team than the one we have now. Bale became the monster he was last season mainly out of necessity - the team needed SOMEONE to step up, and boy did he do so. we couldn't go out and buy someone of Bale's current standing now, but we probably could get an equivalent of Bale from a year or two ago that would be ready to make the step up in the same circumstances that Bale did last season. who is that person? no idea, but for sure such a person exists. there have been very few genuinely irreplaceable players in all the time I've been watching football, and I don't think he's one of them.

I really hope Real fuck off and he does stay, but for £120m seriously...where do I sign?

Yeah but it's all great having that money but how much will Levy give AVB to actually invest in the squad? That's the main problem for me.

well yeah, that's the obvious problem. I was talking in hypotheticals really, with the assumption that all the money brought in would be made available for purchases. I don't think any of it is going to happen though.

Sell Bale, slap down the release fee for Bernard and everyone will be happy.

Well a lot of the points are very basic and no need for such a long article but here are my reasons why we shouldn't sell Bale:
  • It's very hard to find players of his quality. We've bought seasoned internationals who have been useless and teenage wonderkids who have done nothing. When you get a player of his quality you keep him.
  • He's a model pro. Works very hard and is dedicated to being the best. Need people like this to build a professional atmosphere within the club.
  • The money doesn't simply go on new players. We're not going to buy 4 x £25m players or 5 x £20m players. A lot will need to be used on wages for the news players. £20m players ask for very high wages usually.
  • We aren't the most attractive club. We're improving our reputation but the truly top players still have a lot of options better than us. Having players like Bale, Lloris, Vertonghen and others can help attract new players. It's not simply about the money.

We cannot afford to sell Bale because we need to prove that we are going to challenge for trophies this season Spain only has 4 or 5 big clubs we have 5 with 3 not far behind and currently we are in the latter. Spurs need to go all the way this season or we may end up with a rapid decline because the world class players and the group of players below that will only see us ever as a stepping stone.

That article is bang on. If we sold Bale, however we spent the money, we wouldn't be able to replace him. A bit like when we sold Berbatov.

We never replaced Greaves, Hoddle, Jennings, etc etc

The bottom line is, the cemetery is full of irreplaceable people from all walks of life! Of course Bale is replaceable, the first question is when, and the second question is who is the replacement. The when may be ten days, ten months or ten years, but the only guarantee is, he is leaving.

I would take £100m in a heartbeat if it was reinvested directly in the team, I know that is no guarantee of course.

Unless I am wrong, Bale is irreplaceable, and when it is time for him to leave we should just shut up shop and turn off the lights.
