So with our gd we should just need 1 win to top this stage? Surely even we can't mess that up??
You would think so yes, but if we were to lose the other 3 games, you would assume our goal difference would take a decent knock (-3 minimum) and if Man Utd were to win their last 4 you'd expect a big increase in theirs. 4 points needed to guarantee it.

Edit: And that is before considering Man Utd, who have played a game less. 5 points to guarantee it then.

If Liverpool win all their remaining 4 games they'll finish with 29 points. If Man Utd win all of their matches they'll finish with 30 points. So basically, all we have to do is take 4 points from our remaining 3 matches and we're guaranteed to finish atop the elite table.

And if we finish atop the table we'll (most likely) play either Everton U21 or Reading U21, as opposed to having to play one of either Man Utd or Liverpool... The good thing is, Man Utd and Liverpool both televise their matches so if things go as planned we'll be guaranteed a televised final. Yay!

Just a side note - Man Utd play Southampton tomorrow, and anything other than a Southampton win mathematically confirms our place in the knock out stages.

A draw is the perfect result.

Ray Lo's usual excellent detailed descriptive report of Spurs u 21's 1-1 away draw against West Ham u 21's.

The OS version :
WEST HAM U21S 1-1 SPURS

Posted 08 April 2013 7:43pm

Younes Kaboul completed an hour on his return to action as our Under-21s drew 1-1 at West Ham in the Barclays U21 Premier League on Monday night.

The big defender - sidelined since the first game of the season at Newcastle in August with a knee injury - looked comfortable in central defence up against West Ham's lively front two of Wellington Paulista and Modibo Maiga.

In an open encounter, Paulista struck first for West Ham in the 15th minute before Kenny McEvoy equalised in the 38th minute.

The result means the team is nine points clear at the top of the Elite Group from Liverpool, who leapfrogged Manchester United into second after beating Arsenal at Anfield on Monday.

Nabil Bentaleb and Cristian Ceballos had half-chances before the Hammers opened the scoring at Upton Park.

George Moncur whipped a corner into the near post area and Paulista timed his run to perfection to glance home.

The pair almost repeated the trick five minutes later as Paulista connected again, this time more centrally, but Tom Carroll was ready on the post to head away.

We started to find our feet from there - Carroll fed in McEvoy, who couldn't pick out Shaq Coulthirst - but West Ham carved out the next chance as Maiga chipped to the far post for Paulista to hit a downward volley that Lawrence Vigouroux appeared to touch onto the crossbar.

Carroll went close from distance before linking up again with McEvoy, this time for the equaliser.

The midfielder picked the ball up in the inside left channel and threaded the perfect pass inside full-back Jordan Spence for McEvoy to race onto from the left into the box and the tricky winger made no mistake one-on-one.

We went through on goal again within seconds as Bentaleb picked out Coulthirst, but this time Larkins sped off his line to block. At the other end, the half ended with Vigouroux at full stretch to turn away Sebastian Lletget's curler.

Laste Dombaxe replaced Carroll at half-time and the Hammers created the first three chances of the second half, all to Blair Turgott, who missed the target twice and then forced a flying save from Vigouroux.

It was all Spurs from there. Ceballos fired just wide from distance and then Larkins produced the save of the match to tip over Bentaleb's header from Ceballos' corner.

Coulthirst glanced Ryan Fredericks' cross just wide, substitute Jack Munns went close and Larkins was there again to deny Ceballos from 25 yards.

The final chance of note fell to West Ham as Moncur sent in a deep corner that landed at substitute Dylan Tombides' feet at the far post, but Vigouroux was out and in his face before he had time to settle and made the block.

West Ham (4-1-3-2): Larkins; Spence, Potts, Ruddock, Shaw; Nasha (Bywater, 68); Turgott (Tombides, 84), Moncur, Lleget; Malga, Paulista. Unused subs: Driver, Baxter, Maguire.

Spurs (4-3-3): Vigouroux; Fredericks, Hall, Kaboul (Barthram, 61), Fryers; Bentaleb, Carroll (Dombaxe, 46), Veljkovic; Ceballos, Coulthirst, McEvoy (Munns, 73). Unused subs: Priestley, Gallifuoco

Southampton are still hoping to get ionto the top 3 and a semi final place so it should be a tight match.

Just done a bit of number crunching following my post above, and I'm now sure we are actually already guaranteed to be through to the semi finals of the U21 league (bar a massive GD swing) because of the way the remaining fixtures have worked.

Liverpool need to win all their remaining games to finish above us. Liverpool still have to play Man Utd, therefore to finish above us, Liverpool need to beat Man Utd. If they do, then Man Utd would have to win all their remaining games to finish above us. This included their game tonight vs Southampton, but Southampton have to win all their remaining games to finish above us! So basically, only two out of the three can mathematically finish above us, i.e. we're guaranteed 3rd, which puts us through.

You get me?

Still prefer a draw in this match as both drop 2 points. Its not finishing in the top 3 which concerns me (I agree its almost mathematically there) but making sure we finish top if possible, simply because we get an arguably easier draw in the semi finals before faciing (again) probably ManU or Liverpool in the final.

We have the toughest run ins of the top 4, playing ManU (away), Southampton (away) and Arsenal (away), so any points dropped by our near competitors would be useful, although based on performances to date we are capable of picking up the necessary points to top the table by ourselves

Man Utd winning 1-0 at the moment, 20 minutes to go. Come on Southampton!

FT. Southampton lost 1-0 to Man U at Altringham. close but not close enough !

ManU now 8 points behind and they have 4 games to play.

I would have certainly taken that at the start of the season !

Anyone ever get curious as to how much some of our younger players would be worth should we decide to sell them/general curiosity?

I find myself thinking about it a lot and it's really hard to put a peg on values. I'd imagine Rose(Although he is not really a youth development player anymore)/Townsend are pretty up there now in their valuations.

Should be easy to get at least 5m for either of them.
Townsend's value should be comparable with Tom Ince
