He belongs in central midfield. It would not surprise me if our go-to formation next season features a 3-man midfield populated by Højbjerg, Skipp and Ndombele. Between them, they have power, tackling skills, positional ability, running, close dribbling and attacking passing.
There are creative players and methodical players , Ndombele is creative.
I just don't get the deep position for him so I would like to see him as you suggest in a three man midfield allowing Ndombele some support and freedom. He's not only having to win the ball, he also has to be inventive with it. It would be nice to see others do the methodical bits and allow him just to be creative.

Playing him deep in a double pivot is his best position and the best position for the team. He's a press resistant player with a quick release out-ball which are vital ingredients for a modern day player. If you're not playing him in a two then you need to play in a 3CM.
Who are the equivalents in other teams?

No Dier, no winks, no Sissokko.....no problem.
Wonder how many of these we can move on this summer. Given Dier is homegrown and Toby is getting on I think Dier will stay as a CB option but I’d love it if we could move all 3 on, sign a top class CB, CM and bring Skipp back, do that and keep the attacking players fit and firing and we could be right up there.

Dier isn't homegrown.

I would sell Dier, Toby and Doherty from our defence. Bring in one experienced CB around 27/28 year old, and younger one, with Tangana to cover Serge (subject to him accepting new contract). We haveDavis, who can play Left sided-CB as well. Sanchez looks better alongside a capable CB. We also have Roden who will get his games.

In before someone jokes about signing a 38 year old centre back
