Also, Alfie Devine looks a much bigger prospect than I initially thought. Thought he was just an opportunistic buy to supplement the academy. Was very impressive when he got on. Didn’t look out of place one bit.

This.

If Winks was already playing so conservatively against Ipswich, and we have Hojbjerg beside him today, how much better or advance can we expect him to play against PL oppositions?

People like to say his duties will be freed up once Hojbjerg plays with him instead of Sissoko. But for those who have watched the match just now, Winks spent so much time at deep, trying to be the DM and dropping those passes around the area in front of the front 3-4 instead of linking the ball upfront. Some said it was interesting there was a double pivot between him and Hojbjerg. No idea how will Hojbjerg suddenly improve Winks in a double pivot when Sissoko and him played all that last season to such terrible standards. The issue is not about Sissoko or Hojbjerg, but Winks is not suited to a DM role and/or double pivot. There is no doubt Winks and Hojbjerg will exchange their position every now and then, but Winks has to own that space in front of Hojbjerg, not behind, for most of the time.

Dele was the linkup between midfield and the front just now. A midfield trio of Lo Celso, Dele and Hojbjerg are more flexible by all accounts than Winks being in there.
We were playing a double Pivot. His jobwas to be conservative. Like c'mon. He was slipping into defence on numerous occasions. This is coached stuff.

I think some people think that when players go out in a field Winks is just like 'I know I'll step into defence, guess that's a good thing to do'. C'mon.

Both CMs were deep, this allowed for Gedson and Sessgnon to play far foward and have Dele, Son and Lucas play in close proximity to it. Like seriously. If you tell a footballer to play further forward, that's what they'll do, if they can't do that they are in the wrong profession. And Jose would take them out right away, if play that role well is another question.

I guess PEH was given the more mobile role so win the ball further up, with Winks sweeping positionally behind him. This is how most double pivots work. Matic and Kante, Kante and Drinkwater, Pirlo and Gattuso all played this way. In both cases Kante played further forward than his partner. Because one wins the ball and one is about position and distribution.

Ignoring this, this is a preseason friendly about building fitness, maybe some tactical experimentation. Performances are the least important thing in preseason. Getting 45 mins, 90 mins etc under your belt without injury is the mingle most important purpose of a preseason friendly.

Toby with some great long passing today, pinging it about lovely.

Gedson did well, maybe a decent back-up option there.

Cirkin looks tidy. And Clarke looked good to me too (albeit somewhat one-footed).

Good first run-out.

Was enjoyable to watch against a very poor opposition.

My opinion.....

PEH...is a very intelligent player. His positioning and timing has been missing in our squad since Carrick.

Winks....is a squad player. Simple as.

Gedson...had a sound attacking performance. Still extremely young and learning

Sess... definitely has grown bigger and improved... there's a player in there and I suspect Jose knows it

Dele.... hopefully he's injury free, seemed to want the ball more

Son...the usual consistent self

Cirkin...I'm confident we'll absolutely see him this season, he's very comfortable on the ball... coming in on his right foot often...he might get caught at a higher EPL level

Toby...solid. Captain like performance

We need another striker.

Nice win and performance against lowly opposition...sure ain't that the point of early friendles..build confidence

Looking by twitter comments they are happy with this performance

Thought this was a joke so looked at an Ipswich forum - bloody hell they seem to have either watched a different game or didn’t realise we took off almost all our senior players for the last 25 minutes.

On Sessegnon I thought he was good in the 1st half but I wonder if he was told not to get quite so far forwards in the 2nd in order to give Cirkin more protection. On Jack Clarke, I thought he did fine but his game is tailored to having a proper number 9 to get crosses into - he didn’t have that until Dane Scarlett came on.

People seemingly have this ideology in their head that since we bought PEH all he's gonna do is sit and protect the back four and let everyone else roam, it rarely works like that in modern football, especially deploying a double pivot - we'd become entirely predictable when we attack for example. I do expect our midfield to be more solid now though with PEH being able to read the game better and win the ball higher up the pitch thus allow our other midfielder to focus on their jobs in hand.

I'm not sure Sess adds anything? Looks poor and lacking confidence. He won't get a starting place until he shows a reason to be in the team. Disappointing.

Sess just seems to hold back too much. The raw talent is there and he looked bright early on today. Just seemed to set back into his low confidence uncertain ways again.

Foyth was nice in parts but I feel that one mistake - so similar to previous errors - means the day will be a net negative for him in Mourinho’s eyes.

Interesting that Hojbjerg played further forward than Winks, mostly.

Firstly, League 1 football is poor, as someone who has watched a few games, it isn't a very good league of football. Secondly, yeh it wasn't bad from there prospective. Again, context. The last competitive game Ipswich played was in March. It's not like us who are probably still fairly sharp from the end of last season.

Another point to keep in mind, Ipswich were playing a rotated squad, they did not play their first team from the start of the game. So, I don't think the first half was much of a surprise.

The problem with Winks is that he way too often goes for a short sideway pass. I'm not saying White is a better player, cause he's not, but I feel that he had more desire to pass the ball forward when the opportunity came. Like when he made a longer pass to Gedson at the wing. It was not a high risk pass but at least it stretched the Ipswich team. Winks need to do that more often.

That is the whole point. Playing conservative against a League One side.

But sure he's the eNgLiSh XaVi.
