romero i can imagine being thrown in due to how light of quality options we are and kane is going to be late back ... if at all.

Romero hasnt signed as far as I'm aware and untill he has there might as well be still an long way to go on it.

Decent performance, I liked the starting lineup and formation with Skipp playing the deeper of the midfield 3. I thought he had a good game again and it was interesting seeing Dele playing in that role with a bit more responsibility. I thought John struggled to get into the game a bit though but this was probably his toughest test so far and the experience will have done him good.

Lucas was really good today, hope he can take this play into the season. Decent outing from Son and some good finishes, thought he was onside for the one that got ruled off. Bergwijn needs to work on his finishing but his all round game was ok.

I wasn't a massive fan of the system late on, seemed like we was playing 523 or something I'm not too sure but I won't read too much into it. Hopefully was just to get players involved.

Fair play to Whiteman for the penalty save after his error, solid performance and a great save from that free kick.

i am but is that line-up not likely as it stands? and that's even including a player who hasn't actually signed yet - though i expect will.
I’m neither agreeing nor disagreeing, just waiting and seeing as always.

Also, I’m no way begrudging how you feel about things, I get it even though I don’t share in it. Was just a friendly quip at your expense ?

Beating my drum a bit here but it was very noticable how well Dele captained the team, and how seriously he took it. He led by example (he was all over that entire left hand side of the pitch, but was also very disciplined in his positioning) but was also very vocal and pulling people back into shape when it started getting a bit loose.

did we play 4 2 3 1 and then switch to 3 4 3 during the game? My FotMob app had us as a 433 throughout the game

We did, sort of, we started with natural wingbacks as fullbacks, and ended with natural defenders in the wingback positions. (Though to be fair to Paskotsi he is not afraid to get forward; Davies is Davies.)

if it's any consolation, i'm happy with our midfield options:

hojbjerg
skipp
lo celso
ndombele
dele

nice range of attributes there and all at a good age. need the latter three to step up more this season but nuno's style of play should help with that. got nile john developing in the background as well.

Kane
Son
Lucas
Bergwijn
Gil

with Scarlett developing in the background does not strike me as a bad range of attacking options (assuming Kane stays).

Defence is the biggest concern. I like the choice at leftback, and we have some promising young centrebacks, but we need to nail down some new signings: at least one dominant central defender, and a right back (though if Nuno can turn Doherty back into the player he had at wolves that would go a long way towards solving that problem).

only the top two are bringing the goals and one of them wants out - which i would be happy to do if we strengthened accordingly. lucas can contribute to the overall team dynamic but if we're relying on him for goals we are in trouble. bergwijn and gil are unproven. i'm not happy with us at either end of the pitch, the defence more so.

also at 28/29 lucas, son and kane are all going to need replacing in the not too distant future, which is why it would make sense to me to put that process into action now while kane's value is at its highest.

kane won't be going anywhere unless a stupid bid comes in and i hardly see that happening in this climate. He'll be the main striker, we will just need somebody to be back up or play alongside. Son can do a good job and Scarlett looks like he will get a lot of chances this year.

Honestly don't get the infatuation with the formation when formations nowadays are generally fluid, incorporating all those formations you highlighted in your post during a game - whether it's a lop sided attack to make it 3 at back with the ball or alli to get further forward to make it 4 3 3 etc etc.

Not a snipe at you btw.

What do you think is the best combination for that midfield? I think given time to adjust to the pl Skipp will become a nailed on starter as his passing range is superior to the others besides Ndombele who as we know has other limitations.

Hojberg was of course an ever present last season and looked even better for Denmark. So maybe it will be him and Skipp in a double pivot with Lo Celso, Ndombele, Dele battling it out for the 3rd midfield/am spot?

I guess it also depends on what formation Nuno settles with or if he decides to switch things up on a regular basis. I feel that Jose was not able to get the midfield balance right at all while he was with us.

It will probably depend on what we are looking for in the moment. For example, if we are playing a team that likes to press, we probably would want PEH, TN, and GLC. Or if we are playing a weaker team, maybe we want to start out more offensively minded, with PEH, TN, and Dele, and then bring on Skipp and GLC for TN and Dele to preserve the lead.

Totally agree. I think those 5 for what looks likely to be 3 positions is great… if we can replace Sissoko/ Skipp either with John or an emerging talent from elsewhere then it’s looking good.

I’d suggest that out wide Son, Lucas, Gil, Bergwijn is a good selection too.

Really centre back, right back and Harry back up are the areas that need surgery at this point, do that as I’m confident for the season.
