Whose wise idea was it to stick the fans at the top of the stadium stands anyway? 10k fans as far from the pitch as possible to make it as difficult to create an atmosphere as possible.

so they could have the advertising sheets on the bottom! if it wasn't live I'm sure they'd be down there.

After night's complete screwup I feel that I'm getting out on parole at 6 o/c on Sunday.
.
I will half heartedly watch the Leciester game and be done with this all.
.
It was all such a car crash season in slow motion seeing everything that could go wrong actual happening in front of our eyes and in front of the football world. Cringing stuff.
.
An embarrassing season's slide watching the players shamelessly game after game unable to pass to each other, the basics.
.
Levy's brinkmanship - All Or Nothing. Got nothing.

I was not alone in this but was following SC more than watching on tv but it seems every time the commentator raised his voice and I looked up it was another Villa attack.

They ripped us last night.

Mason you looked a complete mug on the touchline and as for the teamsheet.

But as I said at the time he didn't appoint himself.

Some people really don't pay attention so allow me to help with some of the bits above, Grealish wasn't penny pinching it was Villa getting new owners and promising the fans of his new club that their star asset wouldn't be sold.

Dybala was entirely down to image rights, Juve were in a pickle so the transfer fee was doable but then the player/his agent/rights holders wanter Spurs to buy out the tangled web of his image rights; which would've taken a 60 million transfer up closer to 90 million and even then it still smelt like as soon as the image rights were haggled far bigger clubs than us would've then swooped in, long story short it smelt like we were being used.

Fernandes I'm not sure what happened there.

Skriniar would've gotten done but Inter kept playing silly buggers.

Jansen was a Poch pick, the N's were total punts from someones scouting book, Paulhinio no idea but he ended up at Barca as part of a money laundering scheme, Sissoko deservedly got voted as fans player of the year once but I've no idea who or why that transfer happened and certainly at that fee. Docherty was José first pick.

Sanchez showed promise and had attributes you'd look for in a CB, sadly there's something lacking and after Verts went the entire back line stopped communicating.

You say Levy refuses to sell players, the truth is the players we're in the market to shop from don't wish to move on to a club in a "lesser" league or to one not competing at the upper end of the league, for all the Levy is cheap narrative well it can't be too bad if players aren't wanting to move for less wages, plus players tend to either love or loath London making it even harder to shift them.

Does he value some of them too high at the expense of understanding the need to move them out of the squad on occasions? Yes but then he'd get pelters for selling too cheap!

I'm on record as saying I want Levy to move away from the football side of things as that's not his strength (certainly not since they grew the club to the size it is now)

There's a repetitive narrative that Levy didn't back Poch when it's an open secret that Poch wanted De Jong, De Ligt (and someone I forget) and Spurs couldn't compete with Barca or Juve on fee, wages or being more attractive options to the player, you can also add in part FIFA and UEFA being piss weak in handing down transfer bans and FFP; Levy and co found gettable alternatives who weren't total punts who have since proven to be thoroughly decent and Poch turned them down.

I agree partly, we do better building stars than buying them mostly, same with managers going big name or flavour of the month rarely works out.

Tanguay - €60m Anybody watching him would have said that fee was fair and he should be a big hit. Needs a pre-season.
Sanchez - €42m Had a lot of the attributes required and his first season most would say that fee was going to be a bargain.
Sissoko - €35m Never made sense especially at that fee, the only time he was worth that was the year he got player of the year.
GLC - €32m I hadn't seen enough of him, when he's been fit & on form he's been worth the fee; badly needs a trouble free pre-season.
Bergwijn - €30m Needs a run of games and a boost of confidence, badly needs a trouble free pre-season.
Lamella - €30m Total enigma, lot of bad luck, has been poor value for money.
Soldado - €30m Poor bastard, price tag got to him and ate him alive, the fee wasn't bad for what we thought we were getting.
Reguillon - €30m He'll come good if we play 3 at the back with wing backs, needs to calm down and a pre-season.
Son - €30m Apart from going walk-about at key stages of the season, no complaints.
Moura -€29m Has never had a position nailed down for as long as I've known about him, nice guy but a signing from football manager.

I disagree with a lot of this.

For example, with Grealish, Levy knew that the villa owners were in the shit financially so he spent several weeks low-balling them believing he could get Grealish for next to nothing. Then they got new owners and as their star player, Grealish, was no longer for sale. Had Levy shown a bit of respect and decency and offered a fair price to the previous owners rather than fucking around making shit offers then the move would have gone through.

You also say that that Inter were playing silly buggers over Skriniar. That may be so but again it was widely reported that they were determined to dig their heels in on the fee after having dealt with Levy over Eriksen’s transfer. It was payback on Inter’s part.

And as for the rumours that Poch didn’t want to make any signings, I think that Is clearly bullshit. He was well quoted after the CL Final saying the squad needed a painful rebuild. He was also quoted saying something along the lines of ‘there’s no point building a nice house if you can’t afford nice furniture’. That is Poch asking for new players right there. Yes, he may have turned down some players that Levy offered to him but again I suspect that Poch may have requested for example, a Bruno Fernandes and was then offered a Gedson Fernandes by Levy. On loan.

I’m therefore sticking by my assertion that our recruitment has been a total fucking shambles for a very long time now.

And to come back to your claim that ‘some people don’t pay any attention so let you explain’. I think you will now agree that I’ve been paying plenty of attention so please refrain from being so bloody condescending!!

Van Der Vaart said "the problem is they (the players) think they're better than they are"

Spot on.
and Winks being the biggest of the lot,
going on about he should be in the team and since Mason as been picking him he is shockingly poor as always.

When we go through a bad period it's hard to imagine how we can come out of it without massive changes. Likewise a few wins (being top of the league for 3 weeks) and we're all talking about how many trophies we're going to gobble up this season. I don't think we're that far away from being a top 4 team again.

We need to sell some players who aren't quite good enough, and replace them. Clearly. But I don't think it's a 'whole squad' overhaul needed.

Part of the problem we've had, is our recruitment success rate has been too low. We've spent plenty of money, it's just too regularly not resulted in signing players who drastically improve the team. We need to improve that. Leicester is the golden example to try and emulate.

Fans are impatient with lack of trophies. That's valid, but also we need to accept the way football is so top heavy and unfair, that City win everything most seasons. Slim pickings for scraps between every other side. But top 4 absolutely should be an achievable target each season.

Jose, COVID, an interim toddler manager, and Kane rumours on top of poor performances, has become the perfect storm to make everyone feel shit.
The thing that has amplified the anger, and made yesterdays atmosphere so toxic, (and a problem that was inevitable as soon as we were going to build a new stadium,) is the ticket prices.
Once you raise the price for attending the game, the pressure is on the team to give value for that cost. You pay £60 and you naturally expect more than if you had paid £15.
It seems a bit stupid, as that's not how sport works, but it was inevitable that fans would be more demanding if it cost more for them to go to the ground. That was the icing on the cake last night, and a serious issue going forward if Levy doesn't make it more affordable. We'll end up like Arsenal, booing when we lose, and feeling we got what we deserved for the cost when we win.

We need a manager with fresh ideas and a strong philosophy.
We need to hit on the players we sign this summer, and sell those who aren't good enough.
We need to keep Kane.
We need Levy to appease the fans with the cost of attending games to improve the goodwill.

It's not a whole lot different to most other summers, but the manager search is absolutely key to everything else. I'm optimistic we can be a competitive force again quickly. Will we win something? Who knows. But I feel like we're probably over the worst once the new manager comes in. Leicester this weekend will be painful, but THEN things should get better.
