Harry Winks has emerged as a target for Atletico Madrid this summer with Tottenham finally willing to listen to offers for the midfielder.
Everton and Valencia were both keen to sign him ahead of this season.

feels like an agent leaked story...why would la liga leading atleti sign a player like winks?

Everton are more likely his next destination - the traditional next step for upper mid-table midfielders

I'd have agreed with this if I hadn't witnessed Trippier make the jump.

I could understand trippier though - he was a starter for us, played in a CL final and was / is an England regular.

Poch liked him - i could imagine Simeone got a good report from him.

Winks may have fit that bill two years ago - but nothing since then suggests he's at that level.

Atletico? And Winks doesn’t like Jose leaning on him? Simeone will put him out for the ants and the flies with jam on his nuts.

As you say all those things under that Trippier was under Poch, Winks also was under Poch, agree under Jose he's not been that but I guess we'll see under a new manager for him. I personally think Winks is one of those who could be a top player under certain teams, a bit like Jorginho but Athleti was not one I thought would be a good fit but Simeone is a top manager and I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up making Winks fit for his system.

I get your point about him fitting the bill better two years ago but, in the right system with the right players around him, there is plenty of reason for prospective clubs to take a chance on him performing at that level. Winks' perceived loss of form coincided with him being asked to play deeper since the 2018-19 season (that's been well covered in his player thread).

Winks was a starter for us, played in a CL final and would have been pushing for a starting place at the 2018 World Cup had he not been injured (MOTM in England's last qualifier, injured for World Cup, then back in the starting XI for a Nations League win over Spain once fit).

Winks' impressive CL performances against Real Madrid and Barcelona (Atletico's main rivals), and his role in Spain's first home defeat in 15 years, would not have gone unnoticed by La Liga club scouts. It would certainly explain why most of the interest appears to be coming from Spain.

I'd be surprised if a team at Atletico's level would want him but stranger things have happened.

Would be great for us if they are interested. I'd like to see him go abroad and try to make a name for himself.

I think he'd do very well in Spain. He might even get a chance to play in his proper position.

Unless you're telling me Winks is actually the better Harry up front or he secretly moonlights as the Cat he's been playing his position since he broke through.

TBH, Everton in La Liga will be like Atleti. Just that Atleti is probably the best of the rest after Barca and RM, so they are always seen like a top team, although admittedly I must say they do produce very good players in the past.

I think it would suit his game more in Spain.

He’s often performed better on European fixtures or international games, I think the slower pace suits him more than the in yer face English league.

Atleti are top of la liga by three points with a game in hand

why would they need winks?

I think winks showed glimpses to excite - but he’s not developed in the last two years. Naturally that’s not all down to him, but it sounds like he’s a destabilizing force

I just don’t see a top team building around him

happy to be proven wrong though

I think your memories playing tricks on you on a little

he’s only played 20+ games for us once - last year, under Jose, and he was decidedly average

the year of the CL he played 17 as a starter and hasn’t managed more than ten any other year

He’s 25 - not the 20 year old we all hoped would be “the one” when he showed that confidence on tour all those years ago

I don’t think there’s some midfield fulcrum waiting to be given the right chance - he’s not been a regular for either of the two managers he’s been under, even though he’s capable and technically very good

why would atleti see him as anything other than a squad player too?
