I think we can do better than Rose, though that's harsh on the young lad when he hasn't played much.

Interestingly enough, Harry's had some kind words to say about 21-yo Jordan Rhodes recently:

Not exactly a "star name", but after missing out on Wickham, perhaps we're still on the lookout for a young lower-league striker. Huddersfield fans are over the moon about him, "the next Shearer" etc.

I still think Ade is our main striking target in the summer, so the striker in Jan isn't likely to be someone who will demand first-team action immediately. Established big strikers may be out of our price/wage range, or won't be willing to sit on the bench for Ade. And maybe Levy won't want to sanction expensive risky signings until Harry commits/gets his court case done with.

I think the less risky option is a loan, though. Who knows if this kid can score as easily in the PL, much less provide the craft, workrate, and link up play that Adebayor does....

Rhodes would be a long term project - useful if we can get him in but not Ade cover. I could see a short-term loan for a striker as cover, but no idea who'd be feasible. Are we back to Amauri again? Is there anyone else getting splinters, or from America?

FWIW I completely agree with you on Rose, but the advantage he does have is that he's versatile and home-trained. That will come in useful in European squads. We need to train up some better players sharpish!

Marin's one of the most inconsistent players I've ever seen. Plus he was nominated for Bundesliga's worst XI last season.

Most of you have only seen him play (admittedly, well) against us. But what you didn't see is the dozens of anonymous games he's had for Bremen. There's a reason he sits on the bench for them.

Last season he didn't play well but no one in that team did, he's spent more time on the bench this season but their formation has changed.

He would easily fit into our style of play and he's a realistic target. Do we wait until he regains his form, gets back into the team and signs a new contract only to be quoted a fee two or three times greater than what we could get him for now with?

The only real downside to his game is that he doesn't score a decent amount of goals or rather he can't shoot.

Shaqiri would be a great alternative but with Basel getting through to the next round of the CL, January would most likely not be realistic.

Why would we, a team looking to win the title, go for an out of form player sitting on the bench at Bremen? One that has never played in England? One that, even on form, may not get into our starting line-up?

Plus, one that does no defensive work and one that prefers to play on the left where we have lots of cover?

Why should we go for him again?

Agree... Marin is a good player on his day but is not the special player we are looking for or need. He is a poor man's Modric and I would be interested in signing him as a modric cover.

No, special players are ones who help you challenge for the league, as mentioned, Tevez, Torres (in form), kaka or Sneijder as examples.

Whether we can get them is a different question to what our ambition should be, but clubs are not going to sit up and take note through us signing Marin (even though I still believe he is a good player).

I could see a loan for Kaka being a goer, though I am not sure who drops to the bench??

Higuain please

More chance of Kaka, Hottie Eek

Nooooooo absolutely not....I want him for his footballing skills only :shifty:

So, when the police rescue a shackled and distraught Higuain from your garden shed, say:
"Ms Hot-Spur, why have you been holding Mr Higuain prisoner in your garden shed?",
your response will be:
"I took the padlocks orf once a week for him to have a kick-about with me on the lawn' officer".
:hump:

I have only really seen Marin play against us, and that is why I have consistently refused to get excited about him, and caution others to not judge him on those games (in which he was, admittedly, very good).

He can play left, right and off a striker.
He has most of the attributes that we require in a winger
How many wingers currently playing in this league are realistic targets?
Does Bale offer defensive support to BAE?
Wide men not being great defensively isn't a negative.

Why does Harry have to be talking about anyone specific? Surely he is just saying he wants to sign a special player per se.

Did you see his post match interview with SKY? He was almost reaching through the TV at this player he's got his eye on  At least that's how i saw it, he was definitely aiming his comments at a player. Who i don't know but he was definitely trying to lube some wheels

I'd have Hoilett before him. I'd have Shaqiri like you mentioned.

Eriksen, James Rodriguez, Lucas, Reus, Konoplianka, Farfan... Need I go on?

I think you need to watch a bit more of Marin. He's quite frustrating and reminds me a lot of Arshavin (the consistency bit)

how about a 15m bid for adam johnson!? Would they sell him?? He would be an ideal signing, play on either wing.

Good call but I reckon he'll be thinking that even if he doesn't play a lot he'll pick up a league winners medal this season if he sticks around

I've seen plenty of him, my opinion of him isn't based on two games vs us.

As I've said in previous threads - of realistic targets it has to be Marin for me.

He's still only 22. I don't follow the Bundesliga closely but the fact that he's only started 5 games (got 3 assists though) probably doesn't tell the whole story (seeing as he started 30+ the previous ones). I can't find any more info but the fact that he's been not appeared in a number of squads suggests he's been injured.

To find a striker in January with the ability to make an immediate impact but who will happily play second fiddle to Adebayor in a xxxxx-1 type formation (and not be preferable to VDV in the first place) will be near impossible. Any 'marquee' striker would have to be more of a long-term buy and that might not suit us

Not to worry, Hottie - Kaka would be fair compensation - good for fertiliser

I doubt it but it wouldn't be interesting if everyone agreed with each other.
