Bastoni only played 20 games, so perhaps they were interchangeable

That's not true mate. De Vrij has always been the first choice central centre back (libero) under Conte. In Conte's first season Skriniar and Bastoni were playing LCB, with D'Ambrosio and Godin playing RCB. Ranocchia would often deputize De Vrij as the libero when absent. In Inter's scudetto season, Bastoni predominantly featured on the left, De Vrij in the centre, and Skriniar on the right.
