EXCLUSIVE: Redknapp to start his Tottenham wheeler-dealing with loan swoop for Finnan

EXCLUSIVE by NEIL ASHTON

Last updated at 10:19 PM on 18th December 2008
Harry Redknapp will begin his first transfer window as Spurs manager with the signing of Republic of Ireland defender Steve Finnan.

Espanyol right back Finnan is due at Spurs on an initial loan deal as Redknapp begins making changes to improve the squad he inherited from Juande Ramos.

Finnan, 32, signed a two-year contract for Espanyol after leaving Liverpool on transfer deadline day in September, but has played just four times in Spain. Redknapp, who has been told by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy that the club will only make loan signings in the transfer window, will make an approach for Finnan at the start of next month.

Pain in Spain: Finnan in one of his rare Espanyol appearances

Alan Hutton is out for the rest of the season with a broken ankle, but it is understood that Redknapp is prepared to let the former Rangers defender leave White Hart Lane when he recovers.

On his way: Redknapp is happy to let Alan Hutton leave Spurs

Vedran Corluka has been playing in Tottenham’s problem position this season, but Redknapp prefers the reliability of Finnan. He was keen to sign Glen Johnson from his former club Portsmouth, but Levy’s reluctance to spend big in January has forced the Spurs chief to look at a series of loan signings to stabilise the club. Liverpool may now move in for Johnson.

Redknapp surprised the board at the annual meeting this week by saying he wanted to ‘buy proper players’ to build ‘a proper team’. Those outspoken remarks did not go down well in the boardroom, but the Spurs boss will be given significant funding next summer.

Portsmouth defender Lauren has claimed team-mate Jermain Defoe is to make a surprise return to Spurs. Pompey have debts of £95million and this week accepted an £18m Real Madrid bid for Lassana Diarra.

Lauren, who will go to a Turkish or Greek club next month, said: ‘The team is dismantling itself. Diarra is not the only one, Defoe is returning to Tottenham. The economic situation is very bad and we are aware of it.’

Not sure what to make of it.

Would be a pretty good signing as a loan..could fill in well in UEFA games and also when we need/want Corluka in the middle of the back four in prem, CC, or FA cup games.

Can't see how he is better than a fit and on form Hutton.

Id prefer Gunter to play RB, he's never put a foot wrong

why waste wages on finnan? and stop gunters development

But it mentions that Harry may let Hutton go. If true and his other rumoured target Johnson moves elsewhere then whats the long term option? Gunter I guess?

so let me get this right...

We are going to buy a 2nd rate, out of sorts RB and put him into our first team ahead of most probably our 2nd best player of the season thus far, Charlie Corluka.

lock this thread ffs.

Well if it did go through I guess it would be to cover for Corluka when he plays at CB. Not as 1st choice. Can't be.

to be honest, i think its a fantastic RB signing considering ramos now redknapp doesnt think gunter is ready, and the only other rb we have is corluka who actually looks alot better at CB.

I think we deffo need a rb badly, and this is a great loan move, although i think given a chance gunter could be a first teamer

We have Charlie as first choice, Gunter is young but solid, and Zokora marked Ronaldo out the game on Saturday.

Don't think this is our main priority tbh! I'll trust Harry though.

Zokora is not a RB and we are short already in CM. Zokora did well but left alot of gaps, like I've always said though, he gives 110% without being the most technically gifted player around. Id love 10 Zokoras and a Gomes for sheer commitment purposes!

THIS is a great signing, funds are tight and he would be a good squad player.

Also THIS is a realistic signing, all the people talking about Defoe and Johnson and whoever, get a brain! Theres no money to spend especially after shelling out big bucks in the summer.

To be honest I back Levy and say they spend massive money in the summer and how can they justify to the board and stakeholders another massive investment???

Get realistic guys

He isn't, but Hutton is out for the rest of the season with a BROKEN ANKLE, hence why we would only loan him...

doubt it will happen anyways...
