Barkley and Zaha would probably cost very close to that. You're pretty much saying that Levy would sanction spending it on them but not on a single player

Yup, never in a million years would he want to absolutely obliterate our transfer record on one player, it just doesn't make any business sense. Also you said that you don't want to hear about wages but how much money do you think a £60m player would command in wages? For that money we're talking about a world class or near to world class player...they're not going to be asking for £50k a week are they. Besides it's been said before - Barkley is on the last year of his contract so it's doubtful he'll cost that much, Zaha would be nearer to that though.

Barkley and zaha would want like £50k-£75k/wk each. Combine those wages for that quality player.

Barkley will still cost £20-25m easy. He's young, English and homegrown. And Zaha would cost in upwards of at least £30-35m this summer after the purple patch season he's had.

If we pay a player £120k a week upwards for example what do you think is going to happen when our players want to renew? All its going to do is increase our wage structure because other players will want parity and you'll either end up unecesssrily paying out money you cannot afford or unsettle the players because they're not getting paid enough.

Splitting hairs on those values so we will see, I'd understand why Palace will want something close to what we paid Sissoko for Zaha, not sure if Barkley's fee will be that high.

I thought Barkley was poor last night, and against Liverpool. His touch is poor and he ran into trouble over and over. I really don't see the fuss. Don't think he offers significant enough an improvement on anything to warrant the £30m it would cost to get him in.

Zaha at least seems to have something we don't really have in the squad, and maybe after two years of gambling (N'Jie & N'Koudou) it's worth buying a player who's a little less potential, and a little more the finished article.

Doesn't work like that in the real world.

I agree with you nicdic, I really don't see the fuss over Barkley. He is bang average in my opinion and I would rather spend that money on someone who would directly challenge for a first 11 spot and I just don't see him being that kind of player. We can't spend £30m on a utility player either, as we have seen with Sissoko.

Zaha on the other hand could add something to our squad, but again he does not warrant the fee Crystal Palace would command for him.

I would rather us have a crack at:

Pablo Sarabia

Instead of Barkley, and:

Lucas Vazquez

Instead Of Zaha.

Vazquez could be on the move if Real do manage to sign Hazard, and Sarabia has a really good return this season in La Liga, he would bring a creative edge to our squad similar to Eriksen. These are just two of many players I'd rather take a crack at than Zaha and Barkley.

Zaha is no closer to the finished article than Barkley IMO.

For what it's worth, i agree - not much between them age wise and in terms of consistent impact.

A bit like Rose/Walker if they're going to step up i can see it being over the next 2-3 years. That's when they'll build up to their peak as players. I guess this is what we're looking at in terms of potential - coaching them up to that level of conistent, quality performances.

I would like us to take a look at Serge Gnabry. Don't care that he was in the gooner academy and then sold, teams + players make mistakes.

TBF, most of our players have looked very poor v those same two teams this year. Here are the stats for Barkley and our AMs:

games (mins) goals assists
Barkley 8 (710) 1 4
Alli 7 (614) 4 1
Eriksen 8 (713) 1 2
Son 7 (429) 1 1
Lamela 2 (180) 0 1

Last season Lamela was our highest performer v top 6 in 9 games (558 mins) he scored 2 assisted 5. Eriksen scored 1 assist 4 in 10 games (878) last season.

We can take Eriksen out because he does a shit load more in games than any of those other players. Alli, three years younger is already producing more, and Son and Lamela, if you extrapolate the minutes per action (or last season's for Lamela) are at least as effective or better.

Doesn't really make your heart sing does it. I'm not vehemently opposed to Barkley - in the Sissoko way - but I really think it's going to be a lot of money for absolutely no, or very little, improvement on what we have.

I can see some - twisted - logic in Zaha as he is very different to anything we have, quick, talent in his boots, but very unpredictable and erratic - I think he wants someone who is a threat on the counter, but if that's what Poch is after I really don't know why he didn't just give Oduwa or even Edwards (once fit) a few minutes at the arse end of a few games or Europa - might just have saved us 30m.
