Thinking of going to the Sunderland away game after Xmas and spending a couple of nights up there (cheap flights available from Bristol).
Could stay both nights in Newcastle or one night there and one night in Sunderland.

Anyone got any ideas/advice with regards to where to stay (cheap) and where to drink (not too cheesy), and, I suppose anywhere to avoid?

Stay in Newcastle, for definite.

You can get cheap hotels in the City, there's a Premier Inn down by the Quayside which is central.

Yes stay in Newcastle. I'll back up the Bear's suggestion of the Premier Inn, I have stayed there its a good location. If you're feeling flush and want to spend a bit more dollar (not sure of the price because I always get to stay for free or at a reduced rate, but im guessing around £75 per night) then Staybridge Suites which is just off the Quayside, is a nice place to stay also. For both of these the Quayside is a stones throw away, and its 10-15 mins walk at max to other nightlife areas such as Bigg Market and Collingwood Street.

Edit: Just read again and saw you wanted cheap accomodation so scrap the second suggestion. The Premier Inn will be good enough though (y)

Cheers for the info Spurs_Bear and mpickard.

Decided against it - cheap flights now may not be cheap flights when tickets are released/bought. Too much hassle for my fragile mentality!

Drive up to Scotland and pitch a tent. Cheap as chips.

I flew up for Sunderland a couple of seasons back. Night or two out in Newcastle is a must. It's like Ibiza at freezing point.
