Target Top 6 and a Cup

A year ago I thought that there was a cup in Spurs. We were scoring goals, just needed to get King back and strengthen up the defense. Defeats to Everton, Man United and arsenal were hard to take but they were top 5 sides and we should have got something out off Man United (Nani hasn't hit a better ball since) and arsenal (Berbatov should have made it 2-0). We were even seconds away from beating Liverpool at Anfield.

I just thought looking back on our views this time last year could give us some perspective.

Ramos has been hopeless in the league but he has a great cup record, that cannot be denied. We can still go on to win a cup and have a successful season. Only relegation would cancel that out.

We can forget about top 6 though.

Yes, the one thing Psycho got right was the defence; they'd be in the Championship this season if he hadn't. Some people on here scoff at Dunne, but he does what it says on the tin and he's a perfect foil for Richards. Psycho didn't use Hamann much, presumably because he had Barton, but this season he's held their midfield together while others do the eye-catching stuff (I have all this from my City-supporting brother-in-law). Their full-backs are pretty decent too.

Whenever I see a post about Man City on here I eagerly await a reference to your brother in law, I was worried half way through reading this post that it would not materialise, thank god for the last gasp bracketed effort

Now that everybody has become suitably pessimistic, and come down from our high horses, is it about time we recalibrate?

Drop the Board's idea that we must achieve a Top 4 spot.

and

Work to Jol's original target of Top 6 and a Cup?
I'd be happy with top 17

As I've said before 9th and the Lge cup would make happy, indeed very happy come to think of it. Especially if linked with another decent Cup run.

I'm glad this thread was resurrected - pretty realistic me thinks, and a lot nearer reality than some of the posts in this thread :)

just seen this thread and by jolly Jol do some of you need your minds read?? are you guys seriously that deluded to believe we can achieve a top 6 this year, this is on the basis of what actually ???. Is it on the basis of the 25 PL games we've played and only won 5. having had the best strikers in the league and still won only 3 games from Jan 08-may 08. exactly what gives you this notion?? reality has to sink in at some stage really.

No i am not negative or anything like that I'm realistic enough to know that we will NEVER finish near any top 10 side this season. So on the basis of this thread i say we will get to 15th and not any higher, were we to change manager then a possible 10th depending on if it is a Hiddink (10th) or a Big Sam(15th) type manager.

theres a very severe and dark risk that we will be bottom at christmas. if we don't get 3 points at stoke after that we have arsenal, man city and liverpool, all of which i cant see us getting any points out of.

I think we can still finiish top 4. We are a big club and its time for us to step up to the next level.

.........seriously most of you lot must be on prescription medicine because there is absolutely no chance whatsoever of us finishing anywhere near the top 6 this season.

If after 7 games you only have 2 points its the bottom 6 you'll be mixing it with all season not the top 6

As for a cup, well the UEFA is impossible especially with our cup tied players.
With a bit of luck you never know what could happen in the 2 domestic trophies

people do realise most of this thread is from 2007

for this season my early season prediction was 14th - probably way too optimistic but again a lot more realistic than of the predictions for our season

Sorry about not making it clear that this was an old resurrected thread.

But who would have thought that we would feel a lot more pessimistic a year later and after million having been spent. Sometimes you've just got to laugh.

Top 6 is gone (take us to the next level me arse) but a cup win is not.

What we need is a manager with an excellent record in the cups. HHmmh?

Where would you find one of those? There's hardly a manager that has won 4 or 5 cups in the last 3 years walking around somewhere.

As long as we can avoid relegation, we might as well go for a cup win and hang onto Ramos. Surely he can't be that bad at league management to get Spurs relegated? Weren't we 5th for 2 years running with a manager that hadn't a clue of tactics, or so the wise men around here would have you believe.

OH shiit, i was wandering where that level of optimism was coming from, as i read through the posts i kept saying to myself this is why we are regarded as so fickle, okay i got caught.

optimism means someone is fickle? so what does being negative make someone?

i looked back at my post in this thread, and said that it would be a spine tingling moment if ledley lifted a cup, and damn that was a great day. seems so long ago. :(
