If Bale is out, I would try a perhaps speculative shout at Townsend without either Bale or Lennon available...he's not as obvious a choice as Kranjcar or Pienaar...but really the only similar option, and he certainly would be up for it...

I agree for me we need to hold our shape although we got the points against sunderland we didn't look our dangerous selves.... Townsend is a great shout, shame we don't pick team!

I like Townsend's directness but in the Prem I think he would struggle against most full-backs.

I'm praying Bale is fit. Otherwise I think it has to be Kranjcar.

Have to play Pienaar. His work ethic will be crucial vs Mata and Cole, especially because I still don't trust Walker in 1v1s. I don't think Kranjcar/VdV will track back.

It's very similar to what Fergie does with great success with Park. Play someone who can play decent going forwards, but will more importantly put in a huge shift.

The second key could be to play Walker at RM and Corluka at RB. Corluka is fantastic against the tricky quick players, despite not being tricky/quick himself. Remember how he absolutely destroyed Ashley Young vs Villa a couple years ago after being subbed in for Zokora? Walker will keep Cole from attacking because there is no chance he catches up to Kyle if we counter.

WTF!!! Have you not seen how many times he's been caught out against pacey players?! Mata/Sturridge would destroy him.

I have nothing against the guy but tonight is the kind of game he would struggle in.

Corluka is fantastic defensively at RB. I hope he starts. Just think back to that Villa game when Zokora was up against Young and we were getting destroyed. Corluka is subbed on and their only threat is gone. Corluka is very good vs players like Young, Mata, etc. Walker could do a job at RM. Need 3 in CM (Modric/Sandro/Parker), and two on the wings (Bale/Pienaar and Walker).
