Bit of bad news - Paulinho is playing a freindly against Portugal in the USA in the early hours of Wednesday UK time.

Best case could be that he gets back to UK for training on Thursday.

No it didn't, Lennon has actually put some rather nice through passes in his career albeit not too frequently. Anyway that assist to Paulinhos header didn't show that much composure nor much vision, Paulinho did make run that anyone par Stevie Wonder would've and should've noticed and after rather dreadful defending by full back he had all the time to deliver. To me it's more that if he wouldn't have deliveder in the end, it would've been rather big cock up.

Completely agree - it's a technically nice (but not spectacular) cross, to an unmarked man running straight at goal directly from one side of Townsend's field of vision to the other, made from an amazingly big patch of space with no pressure on the ball.

I'm more impressed with the way he left his man for dead just beforehand, and in fact with the technique to put the cross in exactly the right place, than the vision or composure shown.

Certainly the vision and composure weren't lacking...but I've no idea at all why a bandwaggon of disapprobation has got rolling over the assertion that they weren't special, which as far as i can see is all that's been said.

Good point, there. I wouldn't be surprised to see Sandro and Dembele in the double-pivot if it turns out Paulinho can't get back in time for an adequate "cool down period" and training sessions. Good news is that Sandro and Dembele dominated the EPL prior to Sandro's injury. Bad news being that Dembele has been rather poor to start the season. But, with Sandro and Dembele we know what we have and Dembele driving forward from a deeper position on the pitch has been more effective than him playing as the most advanced midfielder.

So, should Paulinho take a backseat in terms of starting, it's so fantastic knowing that we have two other midfielders who can play at the highest level and should be more than enough to really boss the midfield.

I truly believe that if we won the double this season, some of our fans would moan that we didn't score enough and that some of our players were not good enough to get into the Barcelona team.

Good news that Lamela didn't play. Hopefully Paulinho doesn't get any minutes v Portugal either and we can have all our players return fit from international duty. Obviously the long trip might mean Paulinho won't start v Norwich but I'm sure between Sandro, Dembele, Holtby and Eriksen we have enough to control the game.

I know this thread is for people to post their preferred lineups but I just don't see AVB starting Eriksen ahead of Holtby. Especially as Holtby seems to have found a bit of form in the few games he's played. It would be a massive kick in the teeth for him seeing that Eriksen has only just joined the club.

Agreed word for word. It's come full circle for Holtby, as it's time for him to get his first league start against the side he received his debut against.

he didn't start him against the Arse (and didn't even bring hm on) and personally I dont think he will start him against Norwich - he is now under pressure to win these types of home games and he will get significant stick if he doesn't start within reason, so allowing for long haul travel etc in Lamelas case, his best team and I think undoubtedly his first choice starting 11 will have Eriksen in the hole.
Especially as Eriksen is not short a pre season or match practice, its just integration into the team that needs to be dealt with.

That game (Brazil V Portugal) finished about 2 hours before your post...

And Pauli played for about 80 minutes

While I think you make a great point here, the damage done by overlooking Holtby here would be more detrimental IMO than the "risk" associated with playing Holtby. Lewis has finally been employed in a Spurs squad in a more natural position for him (Tbilisi home), and he performed well there. He has both the quality and integration factor, so for AVB to overlook what Holtby offers at the moment for Eriksen's quality would essentially be saying Holtby isn't good enough to fit into AVB's "2 quality players for each position" statement.

Huge, huge fan of the Eriksen signing. But Holtby has to get the start here.

Definitely this. I expect to see Eriksen starting. Don't see the point in waiting either. The longer we leave it the longer the integration takes.

I'd expect Holtby to start on Thursday.

The game Thursday is exactly what counters the immediate integration point. Perfect opportunity for Eriksen to get real game time experience with his new squad. But for now, Holtby is no drop in talent and should be given the nod.

Don't agree. I would be starting Eriksen like I said. Hell I'd like both of them to play I think we are in that much need of an injection of creativity. But if its one or the other, I'd be starting Eriksen.

i would be amazed if holtby starts, not that he doesn't deserve to ... he just won't.

You really think Eriksen is that much better than Holtby?

I think he's better yes. In and around the box I think he has more ability, but that's not to say I don't rate Holtby's chances, I do and have high hopes for him. Eriksen has already massive game experience, he was excellent against City in the two games in the CL, for example. Lewis was very good the other night, but lets remember who we were playing.

Just to add to that, I would still be happy if Holtby started. I would just opt for Eriksen if it were a choice between the two.

If neither started, I'd be fuming.
