As long as everyone is fit I fully expect Tim to name the same team that played Palace.

I really hope not. I'd fear for our midfield and the massive gaps we'd leave in front of the defence.

People have had this fear before every one of Tim's games since it was obvious he favoured an attacking 442.

We are top of the form league table.

We were also completely dominated by Crystal Palace for half a game and they could have been 2-0 up inside 10 minutes. In fact we have only dominated one game while also looking solid defensively and that was against Stoke. Don't let results blind you towards the reality of our performances, that is not the way to improve.

I may be alone in this but I would happily take this as a transition season if the shape of the team was looking good . We are safe from relegation so does it really make a difference if we finish 7th or 12 th ? and I can't see us making top 4 without spending on quality players at CB, LB and another striker. It is fine to let Defoe go but not when you don't replace him and make do with a striker who can't score and another one who is the ultimate in moodiness. I think out of all the new signings Soldado worries me the most . He has had that extended run and I just think he was not what we needed. Every time I see Man City I wish we had been able to sign Negredo instead of Soldado !
More spending is not going to happen and I think it's time to bring in the new signings and give them the rest of the season to gel.
Lloris
Walker Chiriches Verts ( Dawson if not fit ) Fryers
Capoue ( Paulinho when fit ) Sandro Eriksen
Lamela Adebayor Chadli

Let's give Lamela and Chadli and Chiriches long a run in the team as it takes. It's been hard for Chiriches with Dawson next to him. Give them as many opportunities as Soldado has had. Eriksen is already looking promising. If they are not doing it by the end of the season then maybe they were wrong choices. But give them a game here, 20 minutes there and wait until they get a degree in English is crazy.

.............Lloris
Walker Dawson Vlad Rose
....Bentaleb...Dembele
Lennon Eriksen Townsend
..............Ade

I see a few advantages lining up this way 4 5 1. Lennon, while a wide attacker has developed a great work effort defensively....its better to keep up this expectation of him and Townsend...in the transition to attack it does actually become 4 3 3 . The key player in this line up is Eriksen who has to be given the responsibilty to decide for himself when he is a midfielder, when an attacker and when to to loiter between the lines
I don't think sandro verts Lamala or Townsend will start. But I think we should start a little more defensive to start to limit their possession and maybe start to push them a little once their confidence goes and crowed are silenced.

So start with

Walker Dawson Vlad Rose
....Bentaleb...Dembele
Lennon Eriksen chadlie
..............Ade

Bring in Townsend or defo to stretch them if game plan is going well.

And dont let theorycrafting FM tactics blind you to what is a formation that has seen us at the top of the form league.

On the other hand we beat a side 2-0 who only lost 1-0 to City away. We dominated them for 45 minutes and could have beaten them 4-0.

There are always multiple sides to hypotheticals. The facts are we are top of the form table playing Tims way.

It may be better to play with an additional midfielder but TS has earned my faith in him with his performance so far. How about we have a little faith in him?

We aren't going to have loads of space in the midfield, I don't think it is a game for Bentaleb, just as Arsenal wasn't.

I wonder how soldado would be working out if city had bought him instead of Negredo? And how would Negredo be doing with us, maybe the same as soldado? It is not always about one player. The formation and quality around you count. Seems to me that soldado erikson and Lamala all have potential to be great players, but maybe not at spurs, this year anyway. I think Paulino has been the exception, when not injured:)

This is the perfect game for Lamela as well. All pretty and technical, not much in the way of physicality. Absolutely perfect game for him and if he's fit I'd love to see him start this one.

One good showing in the League for and its something to build on and will do his confidence wonders.

I'm fully behind Sherwood and I like he's using the 4-4-2 and its yielding results. That being said it doesn't mean we have to use it in every game, and nor should we if want to give ourselves the best possible chance in each of them.

Swansea are very good in possession, and although they lack a bit of bite where it really counts, if they dominate the ball its going to greatly reduce the amount of opportunities we can carve out for ourselves if we aren't seeing enough of the ball making our two forwards somewhat redundant even if one is coming deep now and again - its not quite the same as having a three in the middle.

I would prefer us to start with three in the middle and look to compete in the possession stakes, because if we do I think we have more ammunition to hurt them than vice versa.

We could always switch to two out and out forwards later on in the game if needs be.

I don't see why we can't approach games differently. Some people were moaning in the Palace match day thread in the first half, unsurprising lol, that it was the 4-4-2 which was complete tripe - it was just lacking in effort and competency, as we saw in the second half it had F all to do with the formation.

But this is a game where I definitely think we should use the 4-3-3.

Fair enough and I can see the attraction. I am not against changing the system but I want there to be a bloody good reason rather than just '442 is naive, we should copy everyone else and play 433' or whatever.

The case for playing an additional midfielder away at Swansea is a situation where I think it may be warranted, as you point out.

However city went there with a 442 and won so its entirely possible and if TS takes a 442 there I won't lambast him before a ball has even been kicked. He's proving those that do to be more clueless with every league win.

Oh I agree. I'm behind him completely, just stating my preference for this game.

Why do people keep picking chadli? He's the most one paced negative winger I have ever seen!

Whatever setup will get us the most goals. Swansea is toothless there is no match winner there since machu got found out. They can defend tho.

So on that basis I want vert in lb as rose has consistently failed to deliver an acceptable final ball.
I also want siggy in there somewhere as he has a final ball. I'm not sure who is would displace; I hope soldado but most likely Lennon. Rest same as this week.
