I know Poch says he wants all the ground work done and signings made for before preseason next year but we all know what will happen. We will be scrambling around on the last day of the summer window like normal. Sure we might get one in but you haven't been paying attention for the last 10 years if you are hoping we will have them all in by preseason. It won't happen I'm afraid, sorry.

But don’t you know the reason we wait is so that the wealthier clubs get their business done and then we can get the gems they’ve missed like Sissoko, Aurier and Llorente. It makes perfect sense, Daniel told me so.

More at stake this year, it's not only fans but sponsors that will need to be impressed.

@Trix this makes sense to me....also imagine that integral to keeping sponsors happy would be rolling out new contracts for key players from Kane to Dele to Dier and the big one being Toby. Do you see the timing of such a roll out being done towards the end of this season or into the summer?

A real statement of intent would be keeping Toby for the first season at the new Lane.

Why is a thread about January still open? We all know full well we won't be signing anyone, and probably rightly so. Would be nice to get future deals in place though I guess

Important to note that for the first time that I can recall, Poch has said we may need to make signings in January, or at the very least, agree deals for the summer.

I think the most we'll do is Barkley, and agreeing a deal for the Sessegnon Bros.

Indeed. It'll be more difficult to secure a bumper naming rights deal and other endorsements if we miss out on CL.

I definitely agree. Shame then we didn't push on more in the summer to ensure that we got champions league this season. A lot of posters deliberated in the summer as to whether the club had rested on its laurels and been a little bit arrogant in not recruiting more aggressively. I wasn't one of them from memory but it seems they may well of been correct.

Unless of course we try and remedy this in January then by bringing players in, which I hope, but would be surprised if we would. More likely, but obviously not bad, would be us finalising new deals for players already at the club.

If we do fail in our quest for top 4 and miss out on top dollar for naming rights I feel we should blame ourself a little.

We saw that our competition all bought new first teamers, while we only bought in Sanchez worth mentioning. In addition, we knew about the fact we would not have any real home advantage this whole season.

We could have prepared ourself better, but obviously it is more to a transfer than what games like football manager and fifa have you think. We also have been unlucky with injuries and drop in form to key players, but still.

If you look at a lot of the targets we would potentially be looking at, they are either overseas or not eligible for the CL which is a stumbling block. Players like Zaha would be ideal but would cost beyond a fortune now. I'd be amazed if we actually brought anyone in. Maybe Barkley as a long shot.

This is the same situation as we had all those years ago, when we waited for too long

It's frustrating. Right now it's all doom and gloom - a few good results and a few players back (Wanyama in particular) and things will feel a lot better. We're so fickle...(or I am anyway)

This is absolutely spot on. Looking back at the summer transfer window it's obvious to see that we left a lot of necessary business unfinished.

All summer long we were linked with a tricky, pacey attacker. First Zaha, who we insulted with a derisory contract offer. Then Keita Balde, who supposedly insisted on a release clause which we were not willing to give him. Then on deadline day JJ told us that pace was coming, but in the end it didn't. It was obviously an area where the club knew we needed to improve, but whether due to poor planning or bad luck, we didn't.

Same goes for central midfield. All summer we were told that Barkley was coming, and there were multiple reports that Poch saw him in a box to box role. Then he got injured and we switched gears to Gomes, but pulled out at the last second. Again it was an area that had been identified as needing improvement, and again nothing happened.

It's impossible to say how much better off we'd be if we'd actually done the business that everybody, fans and club alike, knew we needed to do. But there's no doubt in my mind that our dithering has cost us, and as long as we continue to kick the can down the road on addressing glaring weaknesses within the squad we will not be able to keep pace with those around us.

Plays CM and sometimes LM/LW so can see why we might have been interested in a player who covers multiple positions.

Played for Valencia and was their standout player I believe. Earned him a £30m transfer to Barca.

Barca fans hate him - he's been abject for them.

He has some skill, but has flopped.

Exactly the right technicals for a loan-to-buy at a fixed price, see if Poch can bring him back out of his shell

Has anyone seen much of Torgen Hazard? I’ve not seen loads of him but seems to have a bit of pace, good feet and a brain, whenever I catch BM highlights he always seems to be doing good stuff?
