Team Whispers: Who should Spurs sign in January?

£40M plus for players in January is not the way we do business. I hope there is some truth in the Malcom rumor but I know there isn’t.

We should be all over players that are out of contract in the summer though. Checking in on players like Barkley & Goretzka is just the smart thing to do.

Outside of the U.K. right now, there are only two attacking players at clubs smaller than Spurs that fit the mold of what Pochettino likes and could likely come to the club and really improve the squad and compete with our attacking midfielders. One is Malcom, who would provide real competition on the right with dynamic dribbling and an INCREDIBLE left foot, but he isn't the finished article yet. Still, he'd be a great signing.

The other player is Nabil Fekir. He's as good as Eriksen, Dele and Son. On current form, he might be better than all three. He's continually been linked to Arsenal, but we should be doing whatever we can to compete for his signature. Even Bus-Conductor would agree he's a player worth signing and spending big money on.

''the club do not expect too much activity next month.''

important to those who might get there hopes up again in this window

I don’t expect us to do much in January either but this is what Pochettino said earlier this month:

“Maybe we need to sign the player in January and they can join in the summer, so six months before. Because if we are going to compete in the same period with Man City, Man United, Liverpool or Chelsea, then we are going to struggle to bring the players we want.

“And you need to be clever. Sometimes if you want to do business when the World Cup is finished, and some players are down the bottom and then after a good World Cup they are at the top, then you can say goodbye to that.”

As much as people loath them, Liverpool have been very clever in stealing a march on other clubs by signing players very early. I'm not sure it's a practise that will give Our Dear Leader the horn but I think we're going to start seeing a lot more of it and that is maybe what Poch is hinting at, that we have to be similarly clever. Personally, I think it's a smart way of doing it but wether it's something we ever do regularly is very much to be seen. The ball is in Levy's court on that one. The way clubs conduct transfers seems to be changing. Can he?

Concur. Certainly makes sense in this period of fee hyper inflation.

He has always had a certain way of doing business whether we agree with it or not, it does remain to be seen if the club dives into the market early to tie up deals as this would be a shift in business policy.

I'm not sure we'll be seeing players through the door this window.

As A&C has already alluded to, maybe some deals with players who will join us in the summer.

Think I read Hodgson was given assurances when taking over at Palace that Zaha would not be able to leave this window, the fact that they are most probably heading for a relegation fight adds weight to this one would think.

Sessegnon, I'd suggest that Fulham may well demand if we sign that he's loaned back for the remainder of the season.

Barkley, not long back training. Free in the summer. Are we likely to pay a minimal dividend now, or keep our money and see how serious he is about joining us in the summer.

Whilst it maybe good to see him learn Poch's philosophy now for remainder of the season, by the time he gets match fit and up to speed, the season will be pretty much spent.

I think we'd really only be paying now for him to adjust to our team as opposed to him being a difference maker this season.

Is, let's say £10 million now worth it.

Obviously I can't comment on other potential signings we maybe looking at this window, I've merely mentioned 3 players we have been linked with heavily before and continue to be discussed.

Of course, sales may see us have to be reactive.

All IMO of course.

To do that you have to pay whatever the other club demands which can be well over the odds, Carrol and Lovren are two obvious examples, van Dijk they tried for last summer but have had to stump up a king's ransom to get him this time so it's unlikely Levy will change to that model and I'm not sure I'd support it anyway, mind you one every once in a while would be nice.
