So, on this day, the 21st May 2008, Chelsea have the chance to do something Totttenham Hotspur have never done. Win the European Cup.

So this is merely a discussion thread. Are Tottenham still a bigger club than Chelsea? If Chelsea win the cup tonight, does that confirm that they have acheived more than us (despite our long and glorious history), albeit thanks to a wealthy russian oil man?

Or will Chelsea, despite their millions, never be as big a club as Tottenham.

Thoughts Please

Us because;

We have the better fans
We don't have a filthy rich owner called Abromavich
Our players aren't a bunch of wankers
Our players don't dive, cheat and waste time
We aren't owned by a foreigner
We don't waste ridicilous amounts of money on players aged 29 (Shevchenko)

the list is endless!

Are Forest a bigger club than Spurs?

That's a definate no. Even when they won the European Cup, they couldn't fill the city ground. i think even cloughie said the people of nottingham didn't deserve it.

I don't really like this big club comparisons stuff, cos people can twist the argument anyway they want it

Some people think villa are a bigger club than chelsea and some people think Sunderland are bigger than us and even that West Ham are bigger than us
But for the record I think CFC became a bigger club than us the day they won their first Prem

In light of CFC's debts some people are talking of CFC one day doing a 'Leeds' the fact is they nearly did a Leeds - they were within days of going into admin - then they won the lottery big-time and became one of the big 4 and their trophies this decade have eclipsed us massively

had they not been saved from admin it could have been us in the Big 4- and we certainly wouldn't be having this debate

I have a firm belief that Spurs will still be around, probably similar level to now - fluctuating between mid-table and top 4-5, long after Chelsea have crashed and burned.

Hi Bonjour :) - at best I've probably only got fifty years left on this planet and more likely about twenty five, and I honestly don't expect in my lifetime to see Spurs win as many titles as CFc - (it currently stands 3-1 in CFc's favour, though don't remember their '55' title at the time being way too young - remember the Chelsea pensioner jokes though by the early 60s )

To me in 10 years time CFC will still be doing better than us due to the enormous gap they've opened up-

of course things can change - it's just that on the whole power tends to stay with the powerful - not always of course

maybe in twenty years when the stadium is finally built/expanded and we've got mega rich owners in, maybe -

I just hope I'm healthy enough to appreciate it

I think the main point is, because of the massive gap now between us and chelsea it's hard to imagine there ever being a time when we can chalenge them consistantley.

But i said it at the time and i'll say it again. Castles built on sand melt into the sea eventually.

Are we not all a tad dellusional?

What constitues a big club?

If you feel we are a big club then so are forest and villa. Are they bigger clubs than Chelsea? I think we'd say no, then nor are we....

To say Chelsea are bigger than us is taking a very short term look at things. It's like saying we're bigger than Liverpool and Chelsea and Arsenal because they've won fuck all lately whereas Man U, Pompey and ourselves have.

I also don't like the 'is this club bigger than that club' debate.
Are Manure Bigger than Liverpool are bigger then Arse are bigger than Chelski. It really doesn't matter.

Alex Ferguson doesn't give a shit about whether Manure are bigger than anyone else, he just's wants to win stuff. I respect him for that.

What is really important to me as a long time 'older' Spurs fan, is than we win trophies.
A thread on this has already run this year, but imo, as we have won a trophy this year, Arse haven't, Liverpool haven't and Chelski won't, we have been more successful this season than all three.

Success is NEVER coming second. (or 3rd or 4th)

I must concur.

I read in London Lite yesterday on the train great european nights for london teams.

Spurs had 3
Chelsea had 1
arsenal had 1
West ham had 1

it went into depth how spurs won the first european trophy and the first major european trophy which was the uefa cup.

we have the better history but i would say that wouldn't i

well I said at the time that CFC won the lottery that it was their very lucky day and so it has proved

and I don't think CFC's castle is built on sand anymore

Bates's castle was - that board did gamble the family silver, lost big-time, but a bit like Toon got away with it (and Toon seem to have got let off lightly in the press - was it something like £200m they've had wiped clean - of course they've won nowt so it doesn't hurt me the way the CFC suceess story hurts me to the core)

CFC are now a massive global brand and the genie simply won't be put back in the bottle-

as I've said the two titles they've won are probably more than I expect us to win in the next 25 years

they're tonight in the European Cup Final - something I've never seen during my nearly 50 years of supporting Spurs - and something alas I'll probably never see in my lifetime
