One of the interesting things that can be noted from looking at Chelsea's current profile is that it takes a VERY long time to become a big or great club. Chelsea could go into decline tomorrow and I think that in 10 years time their recent history would be seen as a glorious, but fairly short, episode in an otherwise fairly unremarkable history. They still have less fans than we do at home and abroad and are not regarded as a massive club in the same sense as Man u, Pool or Real Madrid.

The same could be said of Arsenal, despite their great domestic success they are still regarded as a mid-level European club. They have a great manager, a flashy new stadium and have had some of the world's best players playing for them and yet they are not one of the "great" european clubs.

We have been absolutely crap for 25 years nearly, a laughing stock for much of that period, going from new dawn to new dawn and never raising our heads above mediocrity, yet we are still one of the best supported teams in the world. We are still one of the richest clubs in the world, we sell out for virtually every match and could sell 250000 tickets for a Carling Cup final.

We still have that mystique, the aura of a great and illustrious past, something that is almost uniquely spurs. It takes more than trophies and success, it takes class, a certain swagger.

So no, Chelsea nor Arsenal are bigger clubs than us.

There are only really 2 "great" clubs in England with global reach.

Mancs-The world's greatest club currently
Pool-Not far behind

Great clubs domestically only

Scum
The mighty Yids

"Big" clubs

Villa
Everton
Chelsea

Wannabees

Toon
Man City
Sunderland
Leeds

Run of the mill

Spammers
Pompey
Birmingham

Can't be bothered to carry on but you get my drift!

Chelsea have no class, no history and have essentially bought success for the past 10-15 years.

I read in London Lite yesterday on the train great european nights for london teams.

Spurs had 3
Chelsea had 1
arsenal had 1
West ham had 1

it went into depth how spurs won the first european trophy and the first major european trophy which was the uefa cup.

we have the better history but i would say that wouldn't i

Hi Glenn :) we have the better history - but CFC have won 2 Euro trophies - so have AFC - tho the Fairs Cup is a bit flakey to be called a major - but for convenience it has to be ranked thus

The paper may have missed these out by design or accident - but from memory CFC beat Real Madrid to win their first trophy - glory or what - and as I read the same paper I think they included the second one - which weren't so glorious

I must concur.

:) DOX - all this 'doing a Leeds stuff' is years too late - that horse has long bolted, got itself a new owner with shiny new riding gear, and is now living in the lap of luxury (much to my chagrin)

if you judge it on overall history and quantity/quality of support it is no contest. I sometimes think Tottenham fans underestimate the level of support we have all over the country and overseas. It is no coincidence that we are the only club in the top 20 rich list never to have played in the champions league

if QPR got bought by Abramovich and they won a couple of titles would they be a bigger club than us?

it all depends on how short term an approach you take - in 30 years Chelsea may be able to say they are a bigger club than us - right now, I'd say absolutely not

Hello mate i was in full knowledge of those but i am sure they did not mention the other times they won but i am probably wrong.

oh well we still have more trophies in europe than any of the others, for now anyway.

If Spurs had got to the Champions League final, do you believe we would fail to sell out allocation of tickets?

Chavski - big club no, plastic fans yes.

Deep down i think alot of 'real' Chelsea fans understand Chelsea can never be what tottenham are. A real institution of British football. A club with a glorious history, several great players through the years and a true global fanbase. I know i don't envy Chelsea right now. i know i don't envy the racks and racks of pre printed LAMPARD 8 and TERRY 26 Chelsea shirts in sports world. i know i don't envy gold chain wearing chavs walking down the street in chelsea tracksuits, and i know that i'd hate it if my club turned into a soulless mess supported by 80% of school kids just because Drogba's 'sick' or 'wicked' or whatever they say these days

Hi Glenn :) I think you're right, from memory (and I didn't study the article) they skipped CFC's & AFC's first victories - in Chelsea's case quite shamefully cos that was glory big-time

and as you say we're still No.1 on the euro London front - here's hoping MU do us a favour tonight :)

I personally think Chelsea are a bigger club than us and have been for about 5 years, they have continuosly been more successful than us. The only way that we can become bigger, is to realise that we are smaller and do something about it, instead of looking at past glories, like Forest. Unless ofcourse Chelsea do a Leeds in the next few years!

:) Zepstar - some nice sentiments there

as I say I refuse to get involved in the 'big club' debate - did it so many times over the years - it just got too frustrating

We know we're a big club - and we love our club :)

For the record I'll put down my heirarchy

Man U Pool AFC CFC - then joint 5th - Us Toffees Villa - (in many ways the battle for 5th is the most interesting for us)

However, I'm not going to spend hours defending my view because the criteria people use vary so much - as long as people have 'defensible criteria' I'll happily concede they could be/are right :)

An interesting point raised in the press this morining amidst the acres of coverage of the Final. Transfers out of Chelsea could potentially rival the sheer numbers purported to be revolving through the WHL turnstyles.

Consider if Lampard, Drogba, Carvalho, Sidwell, Wright-Phillips, Cudicini and others are let go / forced out. That is major surgery.

Additionally, if their Manager is shifted upwards or outwards or leaves on a statement of "Up Yours" to all those Chelsea fans who have dissed him on the terraces, then who knows?

The billionaire owner has other interests and may turn to his love of art or another passion to pacify the restlesness of a busy active mind.

Watch Chelsea tread water in debt up to the touchlines as they strive to maintain position.

Just a random possibility but what goes around, comes around.
