One observation.
Jos Buttler CAN play test cricket.
That took balls to do what he did.
If Burns, Hameed, Root, Malan and Stokes had the same big pair you MIGHT have drawn this.
The pitch offered nothing on the last day.
And what about his other 3 innings? Or his drops of Labuschagne and Smith? Credit to Buttler for showing some resistance but one defiant innings in a match where the result is already settled doesn't make him a good Test cricketer.

another soundbite interview from Root where you would think he knows what he's doing.

all this planning and he then moans that the bowlers didn't bowl full enough - why didn't he tell them during the first innings? why didn't Silverwood? why wasn't that plan in place before the game? why didn't Root set fields to encourage it?

abysmal and they both have to go.

Very true. Again, just an observation.
I just think he MAY have it in him.
Bringing it out once in 4 innings doesn't maketh the test cricketer you are right.

TBF to Buttler he top scored in the first innings of the first test :D

But as much of a fan of his as I am, Foakes needs to replace him now.

You forgot Pope in that list but with a tour average of 12 and with how he looked this test I’d leave him off as well.
Think Bairstow has got to be a shoe in for no6 next test, not that it’ll make any difference to the end result.

As a keeper sure, but he still averages more in tests than anyone but Stokes and Root, I’d keep him as our number 6. I am convinced he would have a similar record to Prior if he was around then, he’s just constantly coming in at 50/5 because of our pathetic top order.

Buttler played well today, but the situation required no thinking and demanded he just dig in and try to survive.

The problem is the "normal" innings. I see someone who comes out and never looks that comfortable. Caught between trying to play an attacking white ball-ish mode or attempting to play a proper test match innings. He seems to usually gets a start/contribution, but never entirely convinces whilst doing it and his record suggests he doesn't go on to make big scores.

As for the rest of the tour, well usually now at 2-0 down it falls apart and gets really grim. We shall see, but needs a massive amount of resolve now to try and turn things around and claw something back at least. Also haven't had the "fuck it, I'm off home lads" moment yet, which seems to happen every Ashes tour.......

When you get one of your front-line pace bowlers bowling an over of off-spin, as Ollie Robinson did, maybe it's time for Jack Leach to pack his bags and come home.

Depends on the area your looking at. Thinking of coverting to the dark side?

Never ... too far mate - I do love Melbourne though and if i were to move to Australia it would be Melbourne. Been to Darwin and Cairns as well as Sydney. Also been to Perth, I really do like Perth really chilled vibe.
