After the poor performance against Boro, a lot of people keep pointing out that the transfer window hasn't closed, that we should be patient and that the players we need (central defender, left-back, striker) will come. And I hope they do.
But it seems to me that everyone pays too much attention to the transfer window, and not enough attention to the fact that the league has already started. Surely the point of the closed season is to get the players in as soon as possible so that everyone can play together in pre-season and when the season actually starts the players are in place and have had time to adjust to their new roles and surroundings?
The transfer window is open until the end of the month to accomodate the fact that leagues across Europe all start at different times, but as far as Spurs (or any other Premiership club) are concerned, surely we should behave as though the transfer window closes in early August and make sure we get the players in before the season actually starts. As it is, we've started the season with our best striker on the bench because we're not sure if he's staying or going, and we're sending out players who aren't up to scratch because we haven't bought their replacements yet.
I appreciate that deals can be hard to tie up and that it's not always possible to get every player signed in time for the new season. I also accept that Spurs will not be the only club in the Premiership to buy players after the season starts. But I think the club must have known for some time that we need a new central defender and striker, so I am quite puzzled as to why we've started the season without them. That the window is open until the end of the month is irrelevant - the season has already started.
When posters have complained about our performance against Boro, people have bleated "Stop worrying! The transfer window is still open!" but that slightly misses the point: The fact is that in terms of players, tactics and teamwork, we need to be ready for the start of the season, not the end of the transfer window.
