Also according to Balague, Aguerro has handed in a transfer request or something.

Would LOVE Aguerro however, I think he probably has bigger clubs than us after him, Chelsea, Madrid and City will all be circling for this guy.

Adebayor is 180. So no, we can't afford his wages even with creative book-keeping. Osvaldo, Leandro, Gamiero are wages we can afford.

I would rather Gamiero than Osvaldo dispite them being very different players, I just haven't seen enough of Osvaldo to feel really excited about him in a Spurs shirt.

Graham Hunter when asked about Osvaldo...

BumperGraham Graham Hunter
@Lee_Carroll158 I think he's top quality. Good first touch, strong. Good finisher, Competitive animal

This fills me with a bit more excitement.

Did we actually bid for Aguero for Jan or was that the media making things up?

I seem to remember people saying that we did but it was so late in the window it wasn't a serious approach, I may be completely wrong.

Ryan? Rebrab?

If Tevez leaves City I can see them going all out for Aguero if he's handed in a transfer request.

We asked about him earlier in the window (I think I was the only person to post as such) and got rejected, his release clause was then lessened and we desperately bidded for him over the last 2 days of the transfer window. It was too late for anything to be done, bar a robinho-style switch

How can we afford Adebayor or Benzemas wages? Aren't they both rumoured to be on about £150k a week? Anyone seriously think they would take a massive pay cut to come to Spurs in the Europa League?

Yet he almost signed for us. I'm not discounting the possibility that it may have been on loan or alongside some sort of subsidy but unless he moves to a superclub or something, he's almost certainly going to have to take a pay cut wherever he goes.

Good point by A&C here

Also, in a way isn't the fact that he's on huge wages actually a reason that he doesn't need such massive wages now? I know the stereotypical footballer only cares about money, but he must already be a multimillionaire so maybe - just maybe - he'd rather play football now?

Thanks for the info as always Rebrab. Does he have one of these relese clauses that can only be activated in Spain? Either way I think Chelsea and City will be all over him in the summer.

Judging from his previous quotes I would say this is wishful thinking...

However in his recent interview with the BBC he came accross alot more mature than he has ever before so who knows? Playing like he did against us for Madrid he would be a great addition to the team

I'm not sure I'll be able to find the article anymore, but there was a really great article on buy-out clauses when we bid for Aguero.

You may well be right. But I usually feel pretty confident in the "footballers are people too" rule. And me and you.....we're not taking a third of our pay unless the job includes monkey knife fights at lunch and blow jobs from supermodels with morning coffee. It's hard for any of us to come down in salary. If times are tight then we may. But I can't imagine that it will be that tight in football for a proven forward who is in his prime. Nobody is stupid enough to match City wages, but 100+....a lot of teams would pay that. There are a few new rich clubs that might be willing to give it a go...I think Getafe and Malaga have money to burn. Roma has a new owner and who knows how smart QPR are going to run their business. And to be fair, if he's willing to go to Russia, he can probably get just as stupid money. That's not to say any of them are going for him. But examples of where stupidity may well prevail.

This isn't from me, this is from what I've read, but IIRC his buy out clause can only be activated in spain, but he can buy it out and we can reimburse him, but we'd have to pay an extra 9m or so in tax...

Think of it this way: Your friend is in America and you want him to get you something. He buys it, you pay him for it but you also have to pay for it to be flown to Britain, so you end up spending more than you would have to pay if you just lived in America. Obviously the transport charge is just a metaphor for tax

hope this made it easier (though it probably didn't!)

Come on Spurslenny, the season's not even over yet, so it's a bit early to be pessamistic, unless you are trying to use reverse psycology after years of thinking that we're gonna buy loads of good player and been disapointed!

I know, I know.

It's just that we had the chance to strike while the iron was hot (CL participation), and we missed the chance to sign top quality (VDV aside).

Now it will be Europa league, a summer of Harry blowing hot air up our arses, ITK's building our hope up, and reality bringing it crashing back down.

I'm not saying we won't sign one or two. But will they be (a) what we need, and (b) the quality that we need.

Like I said, I've got nasty feeling........

I've said it in the VDV thread in Spurs Chat, but it's probably worth saying here too that I think we're in a better position this season than a year ago to attract top players.

Last season we were a relative unknown in the world of football, we had a few decent players, but none that really demanded attention from the wider world of football. However, signing Rafa and making the impact we did in the Champions League has hugely raised our profile throughout the world.

Before we could only offer Champions League football, but we were a team players hadn't heard of. Ok, we don't have CL football now, but we're likely to be in Europe, and players will have seen Bale, VDV, Modric, Lennon, Sandro, etc. and will be thinking to themselves that this looks like a good team, that is capable of doing something.

Of course if we'd finished fourth again, we'd be in an even better position, but I definitely feel we're a bigger pull this window than last summer.

What I will say is, Spurs enquire/scout about 60+ players every summer. Half of these will be immediately rejected, we have no chance. The remaining 30 or so will be talked to, and we will decide if we want them or not... the numbers get whittled down fast until you end up with the 4 or 5 you actually sign. And that's without adding in the complication of selling your own players, and mind games from players agents and clubs... its a complicated business, and the mistake that some ITKs (despite having very solid info) make is saying too early, before we get a concrete result. For instance, we will probably enquire about eto'o this summer - why not? So if I was told this, I could post now "we're enquiring about Eto'o..." and everyone might just get all a bit excited. But in reality, that enquiry could be met with a firm "f*** off" tomorrow, leaving the person who said it a joke and the spurs faithful despondent.

And this is why so many links lead nowhere (despite solid information) and we don't end up signing all the players we are linked to.

The rule is "take with salt", and remember that not every bid put in results in a player signed.
