"Poor old Benjamin, I keep calling him but he just doesn't hear me. So I took him to see Dr Ross, who has done a really good job of fixing him."

So I think the optimistic answer would be Berahino in (sad old ben hear no) and maybe Illarimendi (really good job = ace/asier, i'll a mend him/illarimendi), with Townsend (AnDrRoss) part of the Berahino deal.

Just putting it all down in one post to see if we can get Trix to say it's right :)

Out of interest, @Trix, is the cryptic actually set using the same construction rules as a cryptic clue would be?

For clarity, in terms of a crossword cryptic, the Setter would define a cryptic comprising of a singular-word definition (which could be a single-word clue), word-play and then some fillers.
Stop stinking this place out with your intelligence and well-measured enquiry.

Also, you could say that by taking him to see Dr Ross, he was 'A See-er', must have been 'ill' and the Doctor did a good (Ace) job of fixing (mend) him.

Even if it's wrong, there's a lot of bits that could be interpreted as Asier Illaramendi

Right I have never really done cryptics because I am not overly good at them, however considering every other post gets dissected for a hidden meaning anyway, I thought I'd have a go.

If it's rubbish and it gets solved in seconds, or rubbish and nobody can work it out I would not be surprised, but it may keep you all busy and stop the thread from getting shut down.;)

Ok, so 'old' Benjamin refers to Stambouli... Stambouli actually means 'from Istanbul' (Turkey) so something to do with fenerbache? Or The player who used to play in Stambouli's current position.. rabiot? (Someone we keep calling)

Dr ross is the 'harmonica boss' ... A manager of peace...? So someone has convinced Rabiot to come to Spurs?

Benjamin- Franklin? Disraeli? Stambouli?! Donkey?
Keep calling him-
Dr Ross - clooney? Gellar? AnDROSS?

I'm going with a donkey called Andros being the solution to something that we have tried and tried to get done... Townsend to be the makeweight in deal to get Berahino.

This is why I love cryptics, just been sat at work reading Franklins' 'poor Richard Almanack'- trying to fit Richard and father Abraham into a football clue. I can't, but I feel more knowledgeable than I did 20 minutes ago.

Poor old Benjamin is also a quote from an old Jackie Collins bok called "the Stud".
So maybe it is about the alledgely well hung Lennon after all?

Sounds similar to Breaking Benjamin - Ashes of Eden lyrics the poor old Benjamin still can't hear me lyrics are I can't hear you and I'm still calling to you!
That's as good as I can offer at the moment

Eden Hazard. He did look like he had already set his heart on somewhere else yesterday.
